Holiday Disorganization At Its Finest

HolidaysEvery holiday season, I lament that I am in possession of the Stuff Disorder gene. Thankfully, I married the Hubs, Mr. Disaster Recovery, and he passed the Supreme Organization gene on to my daughter.

Around the holidays, I depend on my hubby like a blind woman on her guide dog. I thank God for him all the time, but over the holidays — I’m just gonna say it — he saves my bacon every year.

Holiday time shines a strobe light on this not-so-secret shame of mine: I can’t keep my STUFF organized.

For example, when he we unpacked the Christmas stuff from the garage, I found scads of things I’d forgotten about:

  • Cards I meant to send last year.
  • Presents (including calendars) that were for 2012/2013 not this year.
  • 27 boxes of Christmas cards
  • 11 stockings (there’s THREE of us)
  • 19 rolls of wrapping paper
  • 7 things of tissue paper (the jumbo kind)
  • 2 jumbo packs of Scotch tape
  • And NO blinky lights for outside (because we missed that after-holiday sale last year).

Hello??? There is something supremely wrong with this picture. All my family and friends could come to my house to wrap their stuff. I’ve got enough supplies for the entire block.

I’ve had to face my yearly truth:

I’d be crushed by my mess if I hadn’t married the King of Organization.

Confession #1: I’ve stopped trying to get my cards out at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Nowadays, we just order New Year’s Cards. (In really bad years, they’re called Valentines… One really terrible year, I had St. Patrick’s day “hellos.”)

Confession #2: Most of the time I buy the cards and presents on time, forget where I put them, and have to get them again. One year, for my Baby Girl’s birthday party, my husband asked if I would consider just wrapping and labelling everyone’s (old) presents and putting them on a table by the door so they could TAKE THEM HOME.

Confession #3: I have started mailing gifts through the Fall, or even the moment I buy them. I label the package with an “open date.” That means if these gifts miss the proper occassion, at least it wasn’t because I was a slack-a$$.

On the upside, I am making most of my gifts this year. I decided I would paint, create and knit my way through this season. At least my gifts have that personal touch of love, even when they’re not timely.

  1. Ha! I love this post, and the fact that you’ve found ways to stay realistic and cut back on stress. My holidays tend to (over) twinkle, as I’m prone to another disorder: Spaz-itis.

  2. I’m in your corner, Jenny. I have the Stuff Disorder gene honed to a fine degree. Man, I’d be happy if I could get my cards out by St. Paddy’s. I’ve found cards so old, the addressees have moved!

I do make most of my gifts, and that does help, since people appreciate them whenever they get them. That, and most of them don’t know what year they were supposed to have been sent.

Normally I am hyper organized. I always do 2 turkeys, one practice dinner to work out kinks the week or so ahead and then the actual Thanksgiving. I get my tree up on December 1 or 2 and I’m done shopping by the 15th. I have 4 rolls of wrapping paper, that’s it and I reuse/recycle gift bags every year. They are all kept in one closet. But this year my fall/ thanksgiving decor was so pretty I’m not ready to take it down. Maybe this weekend…

I think it’s wonderful that you’re making gifts for the special people in your life! Careful…lots of yarn bits left over for hubby to organize, LOL.

    Merry Christmas, Jenny! xoxo

Kathy, I do manage to use the left over bits of yarn to create magic. It’s fun. However, my hat making isn’t over, as I now have the leeway to expand to my friends. You have been warned. 🙂

Happy New Year. I hope your holidays have been rockin’!!

I used to think I was strictly Disordered but I have areas of my life in which I am actually pretty organized. It’s taken effort on my part to learn how to do it and to develop systems I use and stick with. Sadly, I’ve realized what it really comes down to is: do I care enough to bother? 🙂 I’m also very bad at the holiday stuff. This year, for a change, the presents that need to go in the mail are already bought and wrapped. But I still have to get them to the post office…

I think I got the right gene for the buying of the gifts. Supremely organised, all done and even lying in little Santa sacks with the names on.My gene seems to call a holiday after that and doesn’t want to take part in any activity until the ext due birthday. So the sacks are still lying there as I guiltily walk past knowing they’ve got to be wrapped and hoping for divine intervention with regards to that.
Is anyone organised enough to have a spare god of wrapping to spare?

I’m the organizational type, but Mom was a hoarder. I will not ever have to buy gift wrapping supplies since I inherited her stash – but of course, I bought appropriate receptacles so I can find everything and they have handles, so I was able to hang them on the attic wall. I still have cleaning supplies, hair spray and paper products from her – and I downsized them way back in 2011. I mean really! Who has three bottles of Liquid Gold? How frequently can you actually oil up your furniture and not have your knick knacks slide all over the place?

I’m glad you outed yourself, Jenny – I know this was your secret for the longest time! I know you already know (swear I’m not rubbing it in – you asked!) I’m the ultimate organizer. I have Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving, and I can lay my hands on anything I own in the dark. (Except I trip over the kitten).

But I’m not gloating. You KNOW my weaknesses!

Mary and I don’t really do Christmas (we do the Feast of Nativity on December 25, but really don’t do the whole Christmas decorations — too many cats — and presents thing), so it’s hard to tell whether we’re organized or disorganized. She does do knitting for little gifts for the people at church (this year it’s snowflakes), and she starts those around the beginning of July, so I guess you could say she was the organized one, but it’s hard to say.

Sounds like you have enough gift wrap for the rest of your life….

I’m actually a little of both. Although I’ve definitely been sliding farther over to the Stuff Disorder side in recent years. But somehow I don’t feel a burning need to get a handle on it, so it’s cool.

At the end of your list I was waiting for…”and a partridge in a…” well, you get it. 😉

I love that you’re creating all your gifts this year. How fantastic and well, creative of you! And I LOVE LOVE LOVE my hat. I’m blessed to have been on your list and I so appreciate your talents. And just think. With all your stuffness, you’re totally ready for future Christmases should the Zombie Apocalypse be around the corner. Just sayin’.

You’re a knitter, too? LOVE IT! I am currently a non-knitter because after torturing my dogs with cute knitted doggy coats they started eating my good bamboo needles. And the cat doesn’t help much either. But I know where all my stuff is should I decide to resurrect this hobby, so I guess that puts me in the organized category. Or does it only count if it’s neatly organized? Cuz I know where it all is but it’s kind of all just thrown in a container. Same with my Christmas stuff. 🙂

Sue, my knitting is in two leather storage benches in the dining room. It’s the genius storage place. Out in my vicinity, yet out of sight. I made sure to NEVER open those benches in front of my toddler. 🙂

I say get back to your knitting! Just do it for people – they appreciate it much more than your dogs and they won’t chew your bamboo.

  12. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your family!

Maybe you can knit me some undies to do my charity run in!
