Holiday and Craft Supply Stores LOVE Me…

Yep, I've got a few of these...

Yep, I’ve got a few of these…

As much as I hate to admit it, I could be classified as a hoarder when it comes to Christmas supplies.

We just went into the garage to get our holiday stuff out and the hubs looked at the shopping bags scattered next to his neatly stacked bins.

And I knew that he knew.

He looked at the bags, and swiveled around to stare at me. “Really?? You hit the after-Christmas sales again? Don’t we have enough wrapping stuff.”

And I’m thinking: Is that a trick question? I mean, can you ever have TOO MUCH wrapping stuff? I mean, that’s like asking me if I have too much yarn.

Dont get me started… You see, I’ve got two of these ottoman things…

Pretty, no?

Pretty, no?

[And YES, they’re both for yarn storage.]

Yarn - Hoarding

Hmmmm… After looking at those photos and studying the final count from my garage…

Holy cowbell, I’m a hoarder!

I can’t believe it. I’m not even a shopper! But those craft stores call me… Especially after Christmas with those “buy one, get one free” sales. I mean, who isn’t a ho’ for yarn and Christmas cuteness?

To be fair, as I ponder my holiday stash, I think some of it should be put down to forgetfulness rather than hoarding.

When he we unpacked the Christmas stuff from the garage, I found scads of things I’d forgotten about:

  • 39 boxes of Christmas cards
  • 11 stockings (there’s three of us)
  • 22 rolls of wrapping paper
  • 9 things of tissue paper (the jumbo kind)
  • 3 jumbo packs of Scotch tape
  • And FINALLY colored lights for the tree (I got them in the after-Christmas sale).

As I always tell the Hubs: At least we won’t run out.
His answer: We could invite the entire block to wrap and not run out.

[I think that depends on how many presents they bring over. I’m just sayin’.]

But every year when we decorate for the holidays, I’m forced to face the stark truth: I’d be crushed by my mess if I hadn’t married the King of Organization.

And don’t even get me started on holiday cards.

First of all, Hanukkah come early this year and jacked me up with all my Jewish pals. But usually I get in before the rush and send out some Thanksgiving gratitude cards. (p.s. That didn’t happen either.)

To be perfectly honest, I find holiday cards to be a huge challenge.

Mine don’t usually go out until late December (we call them New Year’s cards). And in really bad years, they’re called Valentines. (Except that one really terrible year… That year I had St. Patrick’s day “hellos.”)

But eventually they all get out.

At least this year, I started my baking on time. I’ve got almond roca and fudge cooling their jets in some tins, and four batches of gluten-free sugar cookie dough in the freezer. Sprinkles are on the menu from now to New Year’s as I inaugurate Babykins into the family Baking Hall of Fame.

Soooooo….are you shuddering right now or nodding your head in agreement? Are you that person I aspire to be — an organized soul? Where are YOU in your holiday prep? Enquiring minds always want to know these things here at More Cowbell!

LOL, Jenny! Seriously…39 boxes of cards? I’m a craft store junkie, too – especially the baskets and tins. And the wire-edged fabric ribbon. And the sparkly pics. And the…

I love to decorate for Christmas, too. A third of our attic space is Christmas bins (8 or so, I think). Packing and unpacking the stuff is a major operation.

But I’m behind on my baking! Arghh…

I know, Kathy. I know!! To my (slight) credit, they aren’t all full. But still, it’s embarrassing. I think I should start giving away Christmas cards for gifts, don’t you think?

I’m shuddering along with your Hubs. The only thing I hoard is your almond roca, and knitting patterns (much easier to organize than yarn.) I’ll admit to having more of those than I can knit in 7 lifetimes (but they’re easy to hide from Alpha Dog, too.)

Oh, and I lied about the almond roca. I ate it all in two days.

I’ll give you more roca on Monday. I just finished another batch. 🙂

And I’m SO glad you hoard something you can’t use, even if it’s only knitting patterns. I guess I know who I’ll be hitting up when I branch out into patterns…

Yes! I’m calling it forgetfulness too. So many bags, so many bows. It’s crazy. You know I don’t remember I have all those bags until after I’ve wrapped everything. Ugh! 🙂

39 boxes of Christmas cards in the garage…39 boxes of caaaaaarrds. Take one down, CRASH, KAPOW, YIP! Hahahaha… Okay, I can’t laugh too hard, if I didn’t live with my own king of organization who knows what my garage, basement, under the bed would look like.

As it is, I only have three boxes of Christmas cards that won’t get sent out till January…

LOL. Some of those boxes just have a few cards in them and could be combined, but it was still a bit of a shock. I’m absolutely FORBIDDEN from buying any more until I actually send out some freaking cards. 😉

As I read this post, I had to scroll back up and check the by-line because for a minute there I could have sworn my daughter wrote it. She could not only invite the entire neighborhood over to wrap, she could wrap that neighborhood, houses and all! I can’t say anything to her, though, because I’m the same way about ornaments. And she knows this. You’d think that living in Hooterville where the selection is thin that I’d be safe from ornament hoarding. But my daughter lives in The Big City, and to justify her wrapping paper obsession, she feeds my own addiction. Every year on December 26th, I wait in dread because I know the phone is going to ring. It will be my daughter calling from her annual After-Christmas-BUY-ALL-THE-WRAPPING-PAPER shopping trip. She will remember any little injudicious remark I might have made about what color theme I’m thinking about for the following Christmas, and she’ll say, “Mom, they have ornaments at 85% off! Didn’t you say you need some purple/turquoise/silver/black/fuchsia/whatever for next year? They have some, but there’s only twelve boxes left.” And I’ll hear myself telling her to get them, get them all, and I’ll send her a check. Then I swear I can hear the smirk in her voice as she tells one of her children to go and get all those boxes of peacock-colored ornaments for Mimi because the other child is busy piling wrapping paper in Mommy’s shopping cart.

Ooh, I can’t wait to see what ornaments she finds for me this year!

This is such a gorgeous sentence, Juli: “You’d think that living in Hooterville where the selection is thin that I’d be safe from ornament hoarding.”

      And where (ballpark) is “Hooterville?”

      LOL…I like your daughter’s style. 🙂

Love this post Jen. And to all who don’t, I live very close to Jen’s house and she is the total Christmas hoarder. One year when I went, she’d purchased presents for people a year a head too! All she had to was wrap them.

I don’t have half of what Jen does and yet hubby complains. I have 4 giant green target tubs brimming with Christmas decorations and every year he warns me not buy more. He’s talking to deaf ears.

Yes, when I’m home for Christmas, my home is a Christmas fairyland. When the grandkids walk in, their eyes light up brigher than the tree! But now I’m on my way to buy some wrapping paper–maybe I should just driver over your house, Jen.

*giggling* Yes, I am. But I can bake my ass off. And I’ve got some gluten free cookies coming your way. If I’m right, you will not get a headache from them. 🙂

Oh, and don’t listen to your husband on this one…you can never have too much Christmas!

  7. Jenny, shall I say that this called to me? Ah yes, it called to me like the ghost of Christmas past. Instead of Bob Marley’s long chain, I have a long line of storage boxes. Over 40 in total. I owned twenty Christmas trees from 12″ to two of them at 6′. When I opened my Etsy.com shop I started selling decorated tabletop trees so my inventory is reduced. I have collected Department 56 for twenty-five years … I love to “decorate” bottle brush trees, create villages scenes and I LOVE AND ADORE paper. Tons of buys for Current, Lillian Vernon, Miles Kimball, the day after Hallmark, Walmart, Old Time Pottery, department store malls, garage sales in January and February.

Because I decoupage, I am the nut who crawls around on the floor at a birthday party or a wedding shower and grabs all the paper, tissue and ribbon for my stash.

I have been collecting since seventh grade and own an ornament that is over 100 years old.

As hoarders go … you might be a baby to me 🙂 Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy some more. Nothing makes me happier this time of year than to decorate, wrap and bake. Put on a long playing Christmas tape, kick back and tell my blog readers another Christmas story or put on all the lights and find nirvana !!!

  8. I did a wrapping paper “fast” for several years and still have some left. But…I went and bought new this year. So tired of the old stuff and I only see it once a year! LOL

Good girl, doing a fast. I’ll confess, I haven’t bought any new wrapping paper for a few years. Last year it was all labels, bows and some other groovy supplies. 🙂

  9. Jenny, I think I love you just a little bit more. I love picking up more wrapping paper, hanging on to cards (and picking some up after Christmas if I can still find good ones). My sis knits and crochets and I learned to crochet, too…so we love cool yarn. 🙂

I love all things Christmassy, but especially ornaments…or things that can be used to create them.

Well, I’m with ya on the wrapping paper. Each year I say I’m not going to buy any because I have some to use up, but then I buy more because it’s on sale and it’s pretty. #HeadDesk.

We live in a small Manhattan apartment and actually had to get a storage unit for our extra stuff. Most of it being Christmas decorations! Plus, we hide rolls of wrapping papper in the backs of our closets, and extra cards in boxes under the bed. Yes, we are hoarders like you and Kitt!

I have athings for snowmen. We have so many of them and I still buy them.
