Recipe: Make Your Cocktails All Healthy-Like…

Only my holistic-remedy-loving-5K-running sister would think to make her alcohol GOOD for you. I was so impressed when I saw the recipe below, so I had to share it with all of you.

Note: If you don’t drink alcohol, no problem. It sounds like this infuser could work on everything from gin to bubble bath!

It all started with her status update on Facebook:

Just tasted my homemade green tea infused gin and it is epic!!

Take 10 oz of your favorite gin and mix with 4 Tbs loose leaf green tea. Let sit 2 hours strain through fine sieve. Whisk 2-4 oz infusion thoroughly with juice & pulp of one lemon & 2 tsp brown sugar in a chilled shaker glass.

Pour in chilled martini glass. Pour 2 tsp chilled maraschino cherry juice on inside of glass so it settles to the bottom, drop in a cherry for more color. Add strips/ curls of lemon peal for flavor & color.

A-freakin-mazing!!!

George: (Our stepfather) We have a recent winner. Take 750 ml of vodka. Add 7 whole cloves and one star anise, cut into 4 pieces. Let sit five days. Remove the star anise pieces. Leave the cloves, but make sure that when you’re pouring the infused vodka for drink that the cloves do not leave the bottle.

Cory Ann: (my sister) George, that sounds awesome!!

Me: OK, you’re scaring me. Your alcohol is not supposed to be GOOD for you. Unless it’s wine…but if you think about it, that’s a fruit.

Cory Ann: Rose petal and cucumber gin infusion is on my horizon. I’ll let you know how that goes, Jenny Hansen. And George, did you mix the clove- anise vodka with apple pucker & butter rum? I think it might taste like an apple turnover. Maybe serve in a cinnamon sugar rimmed glass with a curl of green apple skin & a cinnamon stick.

Me: STOP IT, LADY. Back awaaaay from the infuser….p.s. Doesn’t gin have gluten in it?

Cory Ann:  Not necessarily. It’s often distiller spirits centers around juniper & spruce with other herbs for flavor, balance, aroma & mouthfeel (“mouthfeel”…WTF?) but this is a helpful article for reference: Gluten-Free Alcoholic Beverages – Celiac.com

Me:  Oh yes. I lurve that page. 🙂

Cory Ann: The fermentable base for gin spirit may be derived from grain, sugar beets, grapes, potatoes, sugar cane, plain sugar, or any other material of agricultural origin. It’s really up to the distiller.

So, now you know. You need to go buy an infuser and add some zest and green tea into your life (and your gin) for better mouthfeel.

Who knew, right?

  1. I’m a simpleton sipper, Jenny Jo.

Tazo Zen Green Tea (with hints of spearmint & lemongrass already infused). On the rocks. Shaken, not stirred.

What I love about that conversation thread is the research behind the yummy. Your peeps know how gin is distilled? Take the time to let something ferment for hours and days? KUDOS!

Back when Pino Grigio (distant cousin to Topo Gigio — he lost the R in a gin rummy game) and I were best buddies, I’d laugh when waiters asked if I like my wine sweet, or light, or whatever other terms they use.

“You’re talking bouquets to a gal whose wine comes in a box with a spigot? Seriously?”

Yeah. I rarely had my brain engaged, let alone my filter.

Well, I haven’t tried infusing my beverages yet, but I HAVE discovered agave nectar in place of simple syrup in my cocktails. Since sugar triggers migraines for me, I have been using splenda or stevia, but a friend recommended using agave nectar instead and it is unbelievably good! Here is a little concoction I recently invented: juice from one grapefruit, about a teaspoon of agave nectar, and an ounce of tequila. Voila! A fresh grapefruit margarita. 🙂

I have heard wonderful things for RA in relation to gluten. For me personally, I get very achy and creaky when someone slips me any. The same thing happens to my husband. Let me know how it goes!!

Omg Sista’ this is so funny!!! Btw don’t throw out the left over green tea after you strain it. Let it sit in room temp water and make sun tea but it will have a bit if a kick to it still!! YUMMO!
Also we figured out how to intensify our homemade piña coladas, freeze pineapple juice and use instead of ice in the blender. It’s excellent!

I just found out I may have Celiac disease so this is interesting. I will also check out the link. Most importantly of all, I almost spat my red wine out on one occasion, while reading your post. 😛 X

Shah, I don’t believe I’m celiac (I’m not willing to eat gluten to test it), but I use all the wonderful blog links at Celiac.com all the time. I adore that site. Gluten makes me so very, very sick, so it’s relieving to be able to put questions out and get them answered.

Thanks for sharing you sister’s recipe, Jen! It sounds yummy but I might use vodka instead. Gin hasn’t agreed with me since I was guzzling it back in the 70s. I love the addition of the cherry and juice! I could eat a whole jar of maraschinos in one sitting. Yes, i am obsessive about a few things. 🙂

“…guzzling it back in the 70s.” <– What an image, Marcia. That's hilarious. And I would use vodka too because that and rum are just safer for me with the gluten issues. 🙂

And there is NOTHING wrong with a maraschino fetish…nothing at all.

  7. Well that is the healthiest alcoholic drink I have ever heard of. But then again, I don’t get out much! lol. Either way, ya gotta love the green tea. Tons of antioxidants. Thanks for sharing Jenny. 🙂

  8. There’s a tea company called The Mighty Leaf. They do some really nice tea blends that might work nicely … but what I wanted to tell you about was sweetgrass infused vodka 🙂 Just take blade of native sweetgrass and drop it in your vodka. It takes a while (like a month +) to infuse, but the result is verra pleasant 😉

Well, obviously I like to drink, and also train in the gym. These cocktails sound like a winner for someone trying to stay the healthier course and also party a bit! As I am training for a 5K Warrior Dash (this Sat!) these would have been perfect for me over the last 8 weeks. Still, I’ll need something to get drunk on after the event!

I’m with Marcia – not a gin drinker but love the vodka.
