5 Vices I Get To Keep (Sweet!)

I read a post on vices the other day that made me feel so much better! I just had to share my fabulous find with my posse here at More Cowbell. 🙂

I mean usually, I console myself that my husband picks up my slack and helps me look like the “organized, responsible person” I long to be, but this post told me maybe I’m not doing so bad on my own.

You see, I’m, um…kinda dreamy.

I remember important stuff…someday. Really. But usually I forget it for a while first.

I’m not the only creative I’ve ever met who’s like this. We all have a tendency to go:

Ooooooh, SHINY!!

I compensated for this by marrying my husband. You see, in my marriage, I’m the Jack Russell terrier  and my husband is the Border Collie. He very subtly and steadily keeps me moving in the right direction, while I zig-zag along the path and look at the cool flowers.

Still, I sometimes wish that my brain was built in that linear, detail-directed kind of way. Sometimes I wish I was more organized and less forgetful.

I read this post on such a day and suddenly I felt loads better.

Apparently, these 5 habits (that I excel at) are pretty great vices to have.

1. Splurging
Money doesn’t bring you lasting happiness, but there’s no denying the rush of a splurge. For me, the splurge is usually Starbucks.

[see next vice….]

2. Drinking Caffeine
Research shows that a reasonable amount of coffee does you more good than harm. Not only is coffee no longer associated with heart disease and stroke, but it also has antioxidants. It’s been shown to fight Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and liver cancer.

New research published in The Archives of Internal Medicine also found that women who drank two to three cups of coffee daily had a 15 percent lower risk of depression than those who didn’t, as the coffee helped regulate their moods. (Ya think?)

If coffee isn’t your thing, other caffeine sources are just as good. Various studies have shown that caffeine increases memory, detoxes the liver, increases stamina during exercise and fights Alzheimer’s.

3. Zoning Out
Dreaminess may actually be associated with good “working memory.” A study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people with more working memory have a greater tendency to drift off when the task at hand doesn’t use all of their attention.

Working memory is your ability to remember many different things at once. Working memory accounts for that experience of “being on autopilot,” thinking of one thing while doing another-like commuting all the way home and not remembering the trip. It’s also been associated with measures of intelligence such as IQ and reading comprehension.

So, the next time someone claps, snaps or shouts to get your attention, remind them you’re actually demonstrating your intelligence.

4. Chocolate
The Daily Beast compiled 11 different research-supported reasons that chocolate (especially dark chocolate) benefits your health:

  • Eating 45 grams (about two bars) or more of chocolate per week reduces your risk of stroke, thanks to the dessert’s antioxidants.
  • One weekly serving of chocolate prevents blood clots.
  • A compound found in chocolate may prevent the growth of cancerous cells. It can lengthen your life: The oldest woman on record lived 122 years and ate 2.5 pounds of chocolate per week.

Nifty, huh?

And finally…

5. Being Lazy About Your Money
Budgeting experts recommend automatic payments for fixed expenses like rent or savings contributions. By bypassing your checking account, you aren’t tempted to spend it somewhere else. Plus, you avoid all those late charges.

Do YOU share any of my vices? Do you see them as a negative or a positive? How do you compensate for your “not so great” areas? Enquiring minds always want to know these things here at More Cowbell!

Jen, has cloning been perfected? We might be the same person. Drifting and coffee are essential to me. Drifting brings me to where I need to be in the story. Coffee helps me get it done. I can’t sit and focus on writing without coffee at hand. Otherwise I can’f focus, and the “Ooohhh, shiny!” really kicks in.

I feel much better about it all. Thanks, Jenny!

LOL, Lara. I’m gonna go with your tack about the essential drifting. Like I said, I married the happy border collie who doesn’t mind calling me and saying: “Did you remember to do ‘X?'”

I knew it! Coffee and chocolate are two of my favorite things (not gonna call them vices or addictions). I know when I need them…always.

Splurging didn’t work too well for me–now, all I keep in my wallet is a ten dollar bill, no checks or check cards, and certainly no credit cards. Of course, I always ask for a Starbucks or Caribou gift card for Christmas :).

LOL….You keep chocolate and little VIA packs in your purse like me, right?

I splurge on LOW dollar items like coffee and cool plants for my garden. That’s about what I can afford these days, but it makes me happy. 🙂

  4. I love your vices. I could probably come up with a few if I didn’t have a gnarly cold in the head. LOL Let’s see? Whining. LOL You rock those vices. 🙂

Hi, Jenny, fun post! Even though I thrive on organization (hubby’s always getting on me about rearranging the cabinets yet AGAIN), I share a lot of your vices. Chocolate, daydreaming, and caffeine, for sure (tea instead of coffee). I don’t do much splurging, although I do enjoy Starbucks and Panera from time to time. By the way, dark chocolate is the highest in antioxidants – the higher percent of cacao, the better for you. If you’re interested, here’s a post I did on the history of chocolate, with a recipe for Mudslides (’cause chocolate and alcohol are even more fun together, if we’re talking about vices). 😉

    Happy Thursday,
    Kathy

Hi Jen-Jen! I share ALL of your awesome vices – caffeine (in the form of tea), chocolate, the darker the better, splurging on occasion (can’t go too long without splurging on myself or my grandgirls), dreaminess (thank goodness my hubs remembers and writes down everything!), lazy about money (I pay bills online, carry no cash and only one credit card. Using credit to pay for stuff used to be like *magic* money to me when I was young. Not anymore.) Oh, I feel so much better! 😉

See why I like you so much, Marcia?? These are some fun little vices IMHO. I always feel better when I find out that I’m certainly not alone in my dreaminess. LOL.

  8. I love this post – I’m the same way! My husband is constantly reminding me to do things because I’m daydreaming. Even things that he *just* asked me to do, and by the time I get into the next room I’ve forgotten. Good to know I can tell him it’s a sign of my superior intelligence (and then he’ll laugh, and laughing is good for you).

    • Jenny Hansen says:

Oh yes, do let us know what he says when you tell him “it’s your superior intelligence.” I love it! And I forget things from one room to the next as well, and age has nothing to do with it.

You are so right. My main vice is zoning. I am frequently caught staring at a shelf in the market. What they don’t see is inside my head that germ of a story idea is getting a voice and I’m beginning to hear it.

Tom, you’re absolutely right! I’m ashamed to admit I never made the connection before. Do you see yours too, like a movie?

It actually is kind of like somebody easing onto a barstool next to me and after a beer or so says “I got a story to tell you” once I hear the voice the picture follows. Except once I was listening to “More Mayhem” by Imelda May and began to see a roadhouse with a story and the music as a soundtrack. If you’ve got time drop by my post at http://www.tomwisk.wordpress.com I post on Sundays and just ramble.

Tom and Lara, I hear voices and see pictures in my head. Sort of like a movie, but more like actually reading the book.

Jenny, I am so with you on number 1 and 2. Gotta splurge on yourself once in a while, and caffeine is a must! Starbucks is my guilty pleasure. Every day!

  11. Your vices are crazy familiar girlfriend. You’re a Jack Russell and hubby’s a Border Collie. lol! I had to read that to Bill. He accuses me of being a Jack Russell all the time. But I think I’m in-between. Not sure what breed I am. lol. Because I like to daydream and I corral also. That might be by instinct from being a mother though. Love chocolate. Love coffee, but I cannot drink caffeine anymore since I fried my adrenals several years ago. I do like to splurge, but I’ve found it more difficult after surviving a personal financial disaster. You tend to not part with that green stuff as easily as you used to. See, daydreaming and fiction writing is free. And free works for me! 🙂

I’ll bet your honey loved that analogy! I can understand that you’re cautious about splurges now but NO CAFFEINE??! Really? That’s so very sad, girlfriend. Dang…there are no words.
