8 Reasons I Chose to Blog From A to Z

A2Z-2013-BADGEHappy April y’all! I’ve been on the fence for quite some time about this year’s A to Z Challenge.

I did it last year and loved it, but it definitely requires work and planning. I keep a pretty full plate so I’ve been wavering on it until last night, when I took the plunge.

I am blogger #1741, just in case you wondered how many new blogging pals you could meet. 🙂

If you would also like to take the plunge, click on this link for the A to Z Challenge Sign-up. There are categories this year, which is kind of fun…I chose HU for Humor.

Note: You have until 9:59 pm Eastern time to sign up today and then sign-ups are closed.

My husband asked me why I’m doing this and here’s what I told him:

  1. I’ve never met a writing challenge that didn’t make me want to jump aboard. (It’s a sickness, really.)
  2. I love meeting new friends.
  3. It’s my 2nd blogiversary today, so a little variety is in order. (More on that tomorrow!)
  4. Blogging daily to a letter stretched my writing better than anything else I’d ever done.
  5. My blog is my “morning pages,” which is why I have 28 draft posts right now — just because I post less these days doesn’t mean I write any less. Why not use them?
  6. It will challenge me to write even shorter, and I already used 30-40% less words in 2012 than I did in 2011.
  7. I can always quit if it gets really overwhelming.
  8. It’s fun. Especially when you see the wild stuff people come up with.

In case you’re wondering…

What is the A to Z Blogging Challenge?

Here are the basics:

Can you post every day except Sundays during this month?  And to up the bar, can you blog thematically from A to Z?

Most of the time if you subtract Sundays from April, you then have 26 days–one day for each letter of the alphabet.  When April 1st lands on a Sunday you begin on that day which will be the only Sunday you would post during that month’s challenge.

Using this premise, you would start beginning April First with a topic themed on something with the letter A, then on April second another topic with the letter B as the theme, and so on until you finish on April thirtieth with the theme based on the letter Z.  It doesn’t even have to be a word–it can be a proper noun, the letter used as a symbol, or the letter itself.  The theme of the day is the letter scheduled for that day.

Are you up for the challenge? Or will you be in the cheering section?

What do you think of writing and blogging challenges? Did you sign up for this year’s A to Z challenge? What do you recommend for “D”(for some reason I’m drawing a blank on “D!”)? Enquiring minds LOVE to know these things here at More Cowbell!

Thanks, Cat! I think it was the ability to focus on humor that pushed me over the edge. I hate to get stale on any writing front, so I love the idea of writing prompts for humor. 🙂

No, I’m not up for the challenge. Yay for those of you who do it! But while I eschew schedules, I like routine. And this twice-a-week blog routine is working so well for me. As for humor and the letter D, I was thinking Dating, DFWCon (lots of funny happened there), Desserts, Disney–and for the grammar gal, Diphthong. Whatever you come up with, I’m sure it will be great!

  6. I’m too deep in novels to spend that much time blogging, but you go girl! I’ll cheer you on from the sidelines. As for D, how about Dental Floss? Dentists? Dragons, dynamite, dim sum, dancing, day-glo, doubt, donkeys or drays? LOL! Looking forward to seeing what you got!

In a moment of what I can only assume was utter insanity, I too signed up for this year’s challenge. All kinds of ideas for posts were dancing through my head, and then I started drafting and … crickets. LOL! But I’m determined to do it, even with editing one book and writing another. I’m glad to know I’m in such stellar company! 🙂

LOL…not insanity, Juli…excitement! Challenge. Blog rejuvenation. Thinking outside the box. 🙂 (Feel better yet?)

      Here’s what I did:
~ Opened my Outlook Calendar (any calendar will do)
~ On each day, I typed the letter and, if I knew it, the post topic
~ I went through the entire alphabet once
~ I looked at the missing letters and went to my drafts to see what would work
~ Where my drafts fit, I moved existing ideas to other letters
~ By the time I was done, I only had to brainstorm 4-5 letters

Trust me, I’ll be asking the More Cowbell Posse to help me fill those in. 🙂

I give you a lot of credit for doing this. It’s not as easy as it sounds. I just don’t have the time to allocate to it.

I’ll be following your posts in envy! Let the insanity begin!

Jenny, I think I got my first blog from a word you or some other Texas lady. It’s a**hat. It hit me last night and I had to write it. Today is easy for me, Opening Day. In the Golden Triangle of Baseball (NY Mets, NY Yankees, Bosox) It’s going to be wonderful. the Mets are on and the Sox and Yanks are playing each other.

  15. I love the challenge and I love that you’re doing it. My internet service at home is so sporadic that I couldn’t commit. I have to work several days in advance of posting because I never know when I’m going to have service and I don’t want to get caught at midnight the day before a post is supposed to be up and not have service. That’s one of the many joys of living in the mountains amongst the trees.

Can’t want to read your posts though. I’ll be in the cheering section.

Hooray for you! I participated in this challenge last year and loved it but decided not to join this year because I am focusing on poetry in honor of “National Poetry Month” as well as taking a writing class over on WANA. I look forward to reading your posts this month!

  20. I can’t wait for letters P and U! 😉 Congrats on the challenge commitment, Jenny. You’re gonna rock it, no question.

Um, not as in PU, something stinks. LOL It is too late for me to be typing publicly! You probably figured that one out… Add W(P), now that we’re talking about it. Stepping away from the keyboard…

    Jenny –
Since we have the same day (but not year) as our blogiversary, I immediately thought of you yesterday (4/1). Even though I am not blogging right now, I will be coming back. I needed this health break. But you are in the the back of my mind, gently urging me back to blogging and assuaging my fears. Thank you for being a mentor to me at a time when I was just a commentator to your blog and not yet blogging.

Congratulations on starting your third year with yet another challenge – I always admired your ability to multi-task as a blogger as well as everything else going on in your life. Good luck with the challenge this month – luck and a lot of fun!! 😉

    Many blessings upon you –

  23. I love your spirit Jenny! I love the way you challenge yourself while promoting and encouraging others. Obviously, I missed this. But I don’t know if I could participate at this time anyway. Now, as for the letter “D”, I think my bet is safe with “double-down” More Cowbell! I think you’re A to Z challenge is a winner! 🙂
