People send me the best stuff on social media…I love it! I especially love sharing it with all of you. Today’s ad from Amazon is the most entertaining e-mercial I’ve seen since the whole Togs vs. Undies clip.
It’s about Fifty Shades of Grey and I’ll just let you see for yourself. (I about died laughing.)
[Confession: I picked up Volume 1 of this series on my summer vacation and skipped around for “the good scenes,” but mostly the book left me cold. I didn’t read Volume 2 or 3.]
The women below had a very different interaction with the book. The gals in this ad are obviously not getting enough sex. Methinks it’s making them cranky…
Set down your beverage before watching this video. And close your office door if you’re at work:
Did you read 50 SHADES OF GREY? Did it, um…inspire you to find “love” in unusual places? What’s the funniest video clip you’ve seen this week? Enquiring minds always want to know these things here at More Cowbell!
Happy Monday, y’all…
Jenny
WANACon Details:
Registration is now open for WANACon, an entirely online writer’s conference (including the opportunity to book appointments with agents).
The conference runs February 22 to February 23, and you can register for one day or both. I’m currently scheduled to teach at the end of Day 1 but that could change – I’ll keep you posted.
Click here to register for both days.
Click here to register for Day 1.
Click here to register for Day 2.
Funniest….right there!
Would it be wrong to say that rereading my own sex scenes does it for me? And reading them aloud to Jim does even better things, to us both?
Or that I have this thing for green blood, pointed ears and implacable logic layered over unstoppable passion….?

It wouldn’t be wrong at all, Shan. 🙂
And you’re my 10th writing friend to tell me they’re married to Spock. There’s something about those engineer/IT types that drive us creative types wild. (And yes, my hubs is an IT guy.)
LikeLike
Well, I’m not married to Spock – But Jeniah is (OK, I know that’s confusing, but trust me….) She’s fierce enough to handle him. Me – not so much….
I married me a chef…who waxes poetic on the science of why foods do what they do…fascinating and tasty stuff.
He looks nothing like a Vulcan (in fact, he looks a little disturbingly like a latter-day clone of Henry VIII!), but, then, I’m not the petite, straight-haired platinum blonde who rocks his fantasies, either…).
He’s mightily generous about accepting this Vulcan fetish of mine, though, so I think I’ll keep him (also, I’ve got about 16 years invested…).
On another topic, I hope you stay on Day 1 of WANACon…I could only manage one day, and picked Day one because you and Kristen were on it.
Crossing all my fingers!

Sweet, Shan! I’ll fight to stay on Day 1 then. Marcy is opening the day and I’m closing it. 🙂

Oh, closing time is prime awake time, here!
Jim will be on vacation, even, so I can more or less have the day to dedicate to this….I have been mulling writing conferences for a while, but the kids and I already attend an unschooling one and a camping trip every summer, a few hours away…the budget and family couldn’t spare me for days at a time yet!
And, if you do get shifted to Day 2, I can still learn from you here!

Okay, had to comment when you mentioned about writing friends and Spock (or at least very intelligent men). I think it has to do with that intelligence factor… and Dare I say it? “IT guys don’t just have the tools–they also know how to best use them” 😉
Thanks for a great post and giggle, Jenny!

Hilarious video. I agree with you that cause of those ladies’ crankiness (and having such a reaction to the book) is a lack of nookie. I read all three 50 Shades books but they weren’t a must devour right this moment experience. Especially the third one was really low on conflict for first half of the book. And the sex got tame after Mr. Grey was “cured” of his perversions. But I’m a Roni Loren reader so I might not be your average romance gal 😉

Yes, but Roni Loren can WRITE. I’m just sayin…
The moms in this video were bitchy, but funny as hell.

Morning Jenny! Nope, haven’t, won’t, never will read Shades of Grey. I’m just going to omit my rant on the subject of poor writing, the publishing industry, the tastes of the American people, lol, and go on to offering up a prayer that works of good merit will also find wide audiences. I will add that I find it disturbing that women will support work that celebrates that subjugation of another woman–oh darn it, I said I was not going to get all soapboxie–hand me the cowbell NOW!!! LOL. Cowbell ringing for . . . more snow here in Northern VA. Have a rocking day!

El, that’s the whole reason the book left me cold. I found it disrespectful to women and the underlying message was: “I can change him!” I wanted to scream at the heroine: “Um, no…you can’t. Run away NOW.”
See? No need to omit your rant here. I asked you to shake your cowbell. 🙂

I’m with El here too! It also really upsets me when my son (junior in high school) tells me ‘all the girls in school love those books’. *head smack* I can’t stand the idea that high school girls would ever think that sort of relationship is remotely normal or loving. (And I too will stay off my soapbox regarding publishing industry, writing and such.) El, pass me the cowbell!! 🙂

OMG, I would not want my daughter reading those books! I’m sure she will, but I hope she doesn’t. (And I think you and El have a nice groove going about the publishing industry.)

Pretty funny, but no Fifty Shades for me and no desire to. I prescribe to “garbage in-garbage out” philosophy. If Fifty Shades is what I pour in there, then Fifty Shades is what’s going to come out. Thanks, but no thanks.

Speaking of Ms. Loren, I was reading her first book on my Kindle at the gym a while back and a guy approached at eye level. I happened to be on the steamiest — I mean STEAMIEST — of pages. He turned several shades of burgundy and walked away. Needless to say, I heart e-readers.

Both videos are hilarious. I had to watch them when the kids weren’t home. I haven’t read the books. I just can’t for the same reasons as you. That myth that a girl can catch a bad boy and change him is the most tragic of all modern fairy tales. Also, my brother read it and warned me that I would want to burn my eyes out with a hot poker after reading the word “murmur” for the millionth time.
😀

I agree with you, Diana. “I’m gonna change him with my love!” just KILLS me. I wish we could stamp it out of American culture, from “Beauty and the Beast” on down to “Fifty Shades.”
LikeLike
Oh, sheesh. Yes, even “Beauty and the Beast”! It’s not just in the modern stuff. I’m thinking about all the other stories I’ve read recently where the bad guy turns out to be the hero and gets the girl, while the good guy tries to get the girl but loses and then becomes the bad guy.*roll eyes* Sometimes that bad guy isn’t going to change–at least not in REAL life.

GAAAH! I’m sitting in SBUX and can’t watch the video.
When I get home, I won’t want to watch the video until I have alone time. Defined as: Hubby NOT asking what in the hell I’m watching.
“Um. Chopped? Food Network? No? Okay! Then would you believe The Discovery Channel?”
Jenny, you must have had a hard time finding the non steam parts of FSoG. Even I got bored with them after a bit. Come on! Yes! We know they have sex. Now, can we get on with the plot and character arcs and for the sake of all that’s sane could you not find a signature phrase for Alpha Male better than, “Fair Point, well made?”
[Pause for breath.]
Other than that, it was a
compellingeducational read. Hey! I learned about The Civil War in History Class. Doesn’t mean I want to live it. Note that I did not say well-written. I could have skipped the third entirely. The first two were, IMHO, one looooooong book split into two to facilitate a trilogy.LikeLike
Did you watch the video yet, Gloria?? These gals are right…it’s better than the book. 🙂

I wasn’t going to comment today because that book infuriates me! Hand me the Cowbell! I’m shaking it loud and clear! But when I read Ginger Calem’s comment about what was reported by her son about all the girls in school who like that book. I hate to say this, but it doesn’t get any better in high school or even older. It seems that women love bad boys. They are attracted to men who treat them bad. What is that all about? How many women do we know that think that they can change their man? Iy, yi, yi. Something is definitely wrong with this picture. Scary!
Okay, I’m done. There, I feel much better. Thank you! 🙂

I’d seen the SNL skit before (although still hysterical the second time around), but not Ellen. LMAO I read the sample of 50 Shades. Couldn’t get far enough into it without gagging (no puns intended here; get your minds out of… oh never mind) to even notice the ‘I’m gonna change the bad boy’ theme. It is so sad that girls still believe that, and worse yet that a grown woman writes about it.
