For those of you that tuned in yesterday morning, you found out why I rarely schedule a draft post. I’m more than a little bit absent-minded and I forget it’s lurking. Thank you for your patience.
We’re having Techie Tuesday today, and I’ve got a fun little present for you.
Social Media is incredibly interesting to me…actually, I flat out love it. I love the interaction, the variety and the community.
Most people prefer one platform over another, and I’m going to confess right up front to a bias toward Twitter. (Facebook, as fun as it is, takes up waaaay too much time in my opinion.)
Most of my pals have a love/hate relationship with social media. Below are the ones I hear most often on both sides of the fence.
Common Social Media Dislikes:
- The updates whip by too fast.
- Nobody talks to you.
- It’s too hard to keep up.
- It’s all sales.
- It’s a waste of time.
- What does all that time actually get you?
Common Social Media Likes:
- The community is awesome.
- You can go on when you want.
- Increased blog traffic.
- Tons of information.
- It’s fun.
This post is about the last bullet point on each of those lists. I had tons of fun with a new tool I found through Dino Dogan, an online pal of mine and the co-founder of Triberr.
Zeebly’s new app, SocialMe, sifts through your Facebook updates from the beginning of time and tells you what they say about you.
I know…kinda spooky. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to know. But curiosity won and I’m glad I did it. Since y’all are my posse, I’ll share the deets with you too. 🙂

I knew I cross-posted from Twitter more than was allowed thanks to Lisa Hall-Wilson’s FAB Facebook post, but more words than the Diary of Anne Frank? That one was a bit eye-opening.

Well, that’s interesting…I use Facebook WAY more than I thought I did! Apparently, I’ve posted more words than the U.S. Constitution. But some things weren’t so surprising:
“Kathy uses longer words than 95% of people.”
“Kathy uses words with more syllables than 94% of people.”
“Kathy uses more advanced words than 86% of people.”
LOL! Can you tell I’m a former academic? Ah, well, you guys still love me, right? 😉

Apparently, Kathy and I can chat just fine because I also had:
Julie uses longer words than 95% of people.
Julie uses words with more syllables than 92% of people.
Julie uses more advanced words than 92% of people.
But the one that cracked me up was: “Julie uses more sensual words than 95% of people.” What?! What are these “sensual words” I’m using? On Facebook?

I’m a little frightened to try it out and see what it says about me. (Actually, the only part I’m really worried about is the word count. I don’t know if I want to know that I’ve written more words on Facebook than would fill a novel! …I’m pretty sure I have…)

Marcy, try it – it’s fun. I was afraid of the word count too, since it feels like I’m on FB all the time. But I ended up with “only” 29k. I don’t even want to think about my word count on Twitter and blogs 🙂

I did mine and it was smack on. I’ll have to post about my results. I was thrilled to know I’d written more words than Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. Although, I’d have much rather have written that book than all the Facebook statuses. 😉 Really fun, Jenny!

And yes, 4 years of a dead language because I have a really interesting view of fun. (I did TRY to take Spanish simultaneously, but there was a power struggle between me and the old Gringo teaching it. Stories for another day. During another tedious meeting.)

Hah, I should be writing, but this is fun. Although I’ve got creeped out when, in the middle of the analysis, it said, “we are learning so much about you.”
So I’m optimistic and extroverted. Like to talk about books (duh, I’m an author), outdoors (yep, that’s me), and shopping (well, just shoes mostly). Below average – talking about my day (and teaching, and questions). I’m guessing that’s a good thing 🙂 Above average – talking about Loving, Humorous, Cultural, and Excited.
Compassionate, Ambitious, Optimistic – not bad. And yeah, I use more emoticons than 98% of people, haha. Plus, I use fewer periods, more dashes, more quotation marks, and more words per sentence than most people. Snort. And more advanced words than 85% of people (that must be a side effect of English being my second language).

I like Twitter and FB but I don’t go to either one very often. Twitter is so fast that by the time someone comments on my post it’s gone before I get a chance to see it. I do have an e-mail notification come to me so I know who’s at least attempted to “talk” to me.
FB is a nice way to get information out to a lot of people at once, but I find that instead of offering comments, a lot of people just hit the “like” button, which tells me nothing really, especially if I’ve asked a question. “Like” is not a response to a question.

Patricia, you can just go to your interaction/mentions page and engage with people from there. It’s much easier to do it that way on Twitter (in my humble opinion).

You are an introvert?!?! Say what???? Okaaaay. That’s interesting. But I am in awe of you with twitter. I still have a terrible time with it. I wasn’t on there for a few month and as you know, my mother board died. So I waited until I got my computer back from our favorite place, Frys, which took two month thank you very much. But…when I turned on Tweetdeck, it told me there is a new version to upload. Oh Jenny, I’m afraid to upload it. What if I don’t understand the new version. All this social media stuff gives me a panic attack. LOL! 🙂

This is so interesting. I really think this is actually some worthwhile info. Although I fear what facebook will say about me since I started mine in college. “Jess drinks more than…” Hmmmm
But I love your research into this Jenny. Thank you! I’m with you though. I like Twitter way more. Facebook has gotten too hard for me to maintain as much as so many others are on it. I really only use it to upload photos for friends and family to see and link to blog posts. You are my social media maven. I am so envious of your ability to learn and master technology.

I’m starting my comment to you in Word…because I have Zeebly checking out my whole Facebook thing. And I’m starting to get scared. At ‘472 statuses analyzed,’ it let me know that I use FB a lot (um…yeah), but it’s still going strong after a lot more than a minute or two.
And the results are in…
76,539 Words Typed more than Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, which has a total of 36,363 words.
Kristy uses more words per sentence than 91% of people, fewer question marks than 87% of people, uses fewer exclamation marks than 90% of people, uses more apostrophes in her writing than 93% of people, is more insightful than 91% of people, and is more spatial than 86% of people (WHAT does that mean??? I take up more space on FB?). I also use ‘more prepositions in her writing than 89% of people.’ Not sure if that’s good or bad… I also speak more in the past tense than 85% of people…and that can’t be good. 🙂
I’m way above average in the happy/excited categories, and I scored highest on extroverted, confident, and very non-spiritual (much to my surprise and dismay…but then we’re not supposed to talk politics or religion so that would explain it).

I’ve only typed 5,057 words so far. That makes sense because I’m not crazy about FB. I also use fewer exclamation marks than most. YAY!!!! ha
I thought it was interesting that I use more sensual words than 96%. Just how sensual am I getting in my FB status updates? Hmmm… <- I probably use more Hmmms than most, but they didn't evaluate that.

It’s taken me ten days to get back here… it’s been five minutes and SocialMe is still crunching… I’m sensing a theme here.
Still crunching… like Amber, they’ve let me know that I use Facebook a lot. Um, you think?
Well, not surprising, I’m extroverted and optimistic. But the it says I’m below average in happy? How does that happen?
I continue to be a walking contradiction in my writing:
“Tameri uses more commas than 86% of people.”
Seriously? I hate comma overuse. Need to work on that.
“Tameri uses more apostrophes in her writing than 94% of people.”
What? Am I writing a fantasy nov’el and I make every’thing into a tua’than language?

I’ve written way too many words ~ more than The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. To be fair, I thought their word count was low. I mean, ONLY 40,093? I’m slacking.
That was fun. I might have to make my statuses more interesting to see what SocialMe comes up with next time. I’m thinking it could become a fun game/addiction.
