#ROW80 ~ A Mother’s Day Check-in

Graphic from nextpress.com

Happy Mother’s Day, everybody! Whether you are a mom or have a mom, it’s a special day.

If you’re like me and your treasured mommy has passed away, there is still joy to find in this day by holding the memories close and spreading some love to the other mom’s in your world.

My shout out goes to three wonderful moms I know:

Kathy Owen – If you haven’t been to K.B. Owen’s blog, you’re missing out! Kathy’s post on Mother’s Day on Friday ROCKED.

Margie Lawson – Margie not only inspires writers worldwide, she is also mom to the amazing Tiffany Lawson Inman. Margie reminds me of my own mom, and kind of helps fill the void on “those days” just by being who she is.

Marie Trout – Marie is a friend of mine who is a certified professional coach specializing in creative people. Not only is she the mother of three wonderful boys, she also helps manage the music career of her husband, blues genius Walter Trout. I dream of getting as much done in a week as she does in a day.

Note: Walter kicks off his U.S. tour tomorrow…click here to see if he’s in a city near you.

I hope all the moms reading this post are having a delightful day!

My goals this week revolve around the DFW Writer’s Conference. I started getting ready right around the Wednesday check-in and realized I was out of business cards!

[Gack!!]

My progress for the week is below (in purple to cheer me up). It’s been a hard week – I’ve got all the usual stuff, plus pre-school and conference prep. Still, I’ve gotten about 70-80% of my crap done, so that’s exciting.

My goals for this week:

  • Decide what I really, really want from this conference (because if I don’t know what the goals are, how am I going to achieve them??)
My goal is to connect with my peeps and learn. I feel like everything else will roll from that. Plus I’m hoping that at some point I’ll stop wanting to throw up when I pitch.
  • Practice my pitch ~ Done.
I had to accept that I am never going to think it’s amazing and just move on (and stop wanting to hurl whenever I think about it.) Plus, I’m seeing some awesome writers pre-conference…they’ll help me if I ask.
  • Get the business cards made
I’ll be able to pick these up before I leave.
  • Ship a box ahead with items I don’t want to carry on the plane ~ Done!
  • Finish up the Dirty Fighting contest
This is NOT done. But I’m finishing the details tomorrow. My plane rides to and from Texas should prove useful for announcing the winners when I get back – I want that blog to be stellar! Just to be safe, I’m going to promise a deadline of first week of June. 🙂
  • Decide if I want to take a blogging vacation while I’m gone
I’m going to take my first vaca EVER from More Cowbell, with the caveat that if I can’t stay away, there will be some posts.
  • Do final prep for baby girl to go to pre-school when I return
Daddy is handling the “leveling” appointment where the teachers observe her for an hour in order to make an education plan that fits her level. (She’s a toddler, so I don’t really know what this means, but anything that gets her used to pre-school is aces in my book.) I got all the potty training supplies ready so she can go “potty gangbusters” when she starts school.
  • About 10 other things I’m unable to mention, plus all my normal stuff!
I got about 7 of the “other items” finished. Two are still huge and looming. I’m going to knock those two out tomorrow if it’s the last thing I do. Hubby’s making me a Mother’s Day dinner so that will help. 🙂

Click here to encourage your fellow peeps in their weekly goals.

How are things going for you? Are any of your goals driving you crazy? Did you hit any milestones this week? Enquiring minds always  want to know these things here at More Cowbell!

and I thought I was busy.

I just joined ROW80 late on Friday linking my intent post to Wednesday’s check-in and then tweaked my goal for the check-in post and had actually crossed a few little things off but I consider my most important accomplishment to be the thought I put into the goals list and the fact that i opened the NaNo fiction files for the first time in months to confront the mess they are in.

LOL, Joy. 🙂 Life with a toddler is busy by nature, but I’m delighted that you’ve joined ROW80 – we’re a fun crew. Welcome! And good luck with your NaNo file.

I hope you will make the most of the DFW Writers’ Conference! I attended the London Book Fair a month ago and it was a great way to meet publishers and fellow writers. And good luck with your pitch session! My check-in: http://emcastellan.com/2012/05/13/row-check-in-5-the-art-of-self-editing-your-novel/

Jenny! Thank you SO MUCH for the mommy kindness, girlfriend! I’m sooo touched by your words – you made my day. 😀

What a whirlwind you are dealing with right now! You will do amazingly well and you’ll get so much out of the conference, I know it. Wish I could be there with y’all, but I’ll be thinking of you and sending positive vibes your way.

Most of all, have FUN! (I KNOW you know how to do that, “more cowbell” gal, LOL!).

    Hugs,
    Kathy

I wish you were going to be at DFW too, but if I get any more excitement and happiness for the week, I might very well explode!

Jenny… Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And as you coach yourself in public – sharing your goals, your achievements and your learning experiences (which some popularly refer to as “mistakes”) – you change lives, my friend!

You are very welcome, my friend. 🙂

We missed the Trouts in church today, but I know you were well and being cared for by your boys! Thanks for popping in to say hi. BTW, you will die over the Narcissist post from earlier in the week. I know you were gone and probably missed it. Go back – I’m dying to get your take.

  8. Pitching’s not that bad once you get there, honest. You’ll do great, I’m sure. Good luck with the rest of your prep – sounds like you have a good handle on it!

You are sweet, Jennette. I know that other writers also throw up a little in their mouth when they think about pitching and that it’s normal. It’s pretty likely that I’ll just ignore the nerves and sail through, but I hate thinking about it!

YES! Thank the Lord. I have loved having this time with her but you really don’t get a hell of a lot done when you’re taking care of a baby, working part-time, writing, and managing a few blogs. I’m ready to have more free time!!

You know I’m giddy at the thought of getting to meet you and some other fabulous writer friends at DFW Con! Don’t sweat the pitch. If you get nervous, don’t picture the agent in her underwear but rather playing a cowbell. That will calm you down!

Best wishes for a productive week! Your sweet girl will do fine.

      I am beyond giddy, Julie!

I told one of my besties: “Imagine meeting some of the most important people you’ll ever know, talking to them and cheering each other on for a year, then getting to meet them LIVE. That’s how I feel.”

p.s. Have y’all read Julie’s update? Did you see she’s written 25,000 words THIS WEEK??!! Wowzer…
