The Little Jenny That Could…

Photo from Examiner.com

A “jenny” is a mule. Did you know that?! Because my name soooo fits me.

[I heard those snickers. *narrows eyes*]

For all of you that didn’t know, or somehow hadn’t guessed, I’m incredibly stubborn. Especially about the important stuff.

[Quit that laughing…]

And I can’t resist a good challenge. Last month’s A-Z Challenge was the last thing I “just couldn’t resist” and it knocked me on my can! You haven’t seen a ROW80 update out of me in a few weeks now because I was too damn tired.

However, because I am true to my “Jenny nature,” I always dust off my backside, get up again and wade back into the fray. My current fray is the DFW Writer’s Conference.  I have ONE WEEK to get myself together and I just realized I’m out of business cards!

My goals for this week:

  • Decide what I really, really want from this conference (because if I don’t know what the goals are, how am I going to achieve them??)
  • Practice my pitch
  • Get the business cards made
  • Ship a box ahead with items I don’t want to carry on the plane (I’ve got “people” there!)
  • Finish up the Dirty Fighting contest
  • Decide if I want to take a blogging vacation while I’m gone
  • Do final prep for baby girl to go to pre-school when I return
  • About 10 other things I’m unable to mention, plus all my normal stuff!

Click here to go see what all your other ROW80 peeps are up to. May’s got some really decent buzz going. 🙂

Are you a “jenny?” What does your name mean? What’s your current challenge? How are you doing with your writing goals? Are you in the midst of falling on your can…or are you getting up and dusting off? Enquiring minds always  want to know these things here at More Cowbell!

    HI Jenny! –
My current challenge is that I am doing to much and it is affecting my health and my writing. I wrote a great summary of an idea for a book and what has happened since then. I told 2 people about it and that’s it!! I also was not able to blog one week. So, I will have to do some re-arranging and maybe some cutting of things that I thought I could do. I may not be able to do them now, but perhaps at another time I will be able to do them. I know that growth comes when we are pushed to what seem like our limits. That’s the only way I am going to grow as a writer and as a person by pushing and stretching what I think are finite limits. But, boy, does it hurt sometimes, or at least feel very uncomfortable.

    Thanks for the ear, Jenny!

Oh, Monique! Don’t let anything affect your health negatively…you have to fight hard enough for that as it is.

I agree that growth comes when we push beyond where we think we can go, but giving up your health in the process is just not an option, girlie!

Love this! My name means Italian lady, and I am certainly no lady. LOL. However, you are no mule either, little Jenny that could. 🙂 And the A to Z kicked my butt too! I almost disappeared from social media for good due to it, slowly recovering…

That is hilarious, Donna! I love a gal “who is certainly no lady.” You are completely my kind of gal. It’s hilarious because your picture LOOKS like you’re such a lady. LOL…

      Nope, no disappearing…just rest…..

You’re so smart for thinking ahead about your goals, Jenny. I tend to just bumble along, and don’t get anywhere near as much accomplished! Take that vacation from blogging – focus on your goals – we’ll be here, waiting to hear about it when you get back!

Yes, we shall see on the blog vacation but I’m leaning that direction. With maybe a vlog and a conference update post thrown into the mix. 🙂

  4. Woot woot – here’s to your post A-Z recovery and to accomplishing all your goals. I hope you have a BLAST at the DFW conference – I will be there in spirit of course. 🙂
My current challenge…hmmm! I would say to get back into a blogging/writing routine, figure out what my first novel is going to be and STICK with it and start storyboarding etc, put together some classes….and have a heck of a summer with hubby!
Here’s to both of us achieving MUCH success!

Good luck with the things you have to do before the conference!

Ooooh, that’s lovely, Juliana! I’m thinking of JuNoWriMo but I’m too pooped to do anything serious about it. Keep working on me – I’ll bet you can swing me that direction. 🙂

p.s. My daughter’s name means “God’s gracious gift.”

I’m also prepping for the conference. My big push is to finish this YA manuscript. I’ve already written over 14k words this week! Crazy, huh? I am also ordering business cards…TODAY. When I return, the challenge will be to clean my house since it won’t be getting much attention for the next couple of weeks. See you soon!

  8. Adorable, Jenny. That “jenny” is ALmost as cute as you. Standing back up every time we stumble or fall is so important… and painful, at times. 😉 Have a blast at DFW! Can’t wait to hear about your fun. I horrified an agent at that conference with my pitch last year, which I took as a compliment (since I write thrillers). Was great practice for my next pitch round, which led me to my agent.

That’s fantastic…I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall for that pitch! Thanks for the compliments on me and my mule. She’s a cute little jenny, isn’t she?

  9. Why yes, as a matter of fact, I am a jenny! We had an assignment when I was in 6th grade where we had to look up our first name in the dictionary and write about it. And I went by Jenny at the time… 🙂

I have two birthdays and Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, and I’ve done NO shopping. Getting gifts on time (and THINKING of what to get!) is my challenge. Good luck with yours!

That is a very decent challenge, “Little Jenny!” I dislike shopping and you’ve reminded me that I have to go do it this week. Gack!!! Good luck on your gifts. 🙂

  10. Take a blogging vacation…don’t worry, we’ll all be here waiting with baited breath to hear about the conference. Kudos for putting together a plan for the conference. You’ll probably want to plan on shipping a box or two or three home too. I understand you gather LOTS of stuff at conferences 🙂

I’d have to look up my name…Rae comes from Rachel, but I’m not sure off the top of my head what it means, and Lynn/e is a cascade. Probably not as apropos as your name!

      Origin:Scottish
      Rank: #918 on BabyCenter
      Meaning: Ewe, lamb, grace

  11. Aw, that little Jenny is so cute! Wow, your list makes me tired, I’m sure you must exhausted (I am super curious about those 10 things you can’t mention). I hope you have a total blast at DFWCon. I’m a total Jenny, too. Right now I’m focusing on reading craft books and outlining my fiction novel. That darn fantasy is finally off at the editors, so I feel like I’m on vacay a bit!

Say hi to everyone at the conference!

Have fun at the conference Jenny. My current challenge is to complete a novel I started 2 years ago. I wrote a few thousand words of it last weekend so I want to stick with it now! I think ‘Emma’ is a German name and means ‘universal’.

A mule? LOL! That is hilarious Jenny! You crack me up girl! My husband says I’m like a Jack Russell terrier. I don’t know what to think of that. LOL! When I focus on something, I’m really focused. So maybe that’s what he’s talking about. And I am so excited for you and others who are going to the DWF Conference! You are going to love it! I am twisting the arms of all those attending so I can hear all about it. I hate to miss out on anything! You’re killing me here! LOL! Have fun! 🙂

  19. I never knew a female mule was called a Jenny. It is interesting. I’ve always been more of a fan of the meaning of Jennifer which finds its roots in the name Guinevere. It means white, fair, or smooth. I take it to mean purity. Take that how you will, and for the record I didn’t laugh. 😀 You brought a smile to my face as always though. Take care!
