11 Ways To Turn Your Brain Inside Out

Fabio Bueno tagged me with 11 of the most AMAZING questions I’ve ever seen so today’s post is in answer to those.

Confession time: I suck at this stuff. Questions, blog awards, Lucky 7’s…I appreciate the hell out of it when I get tagged but since I have a posting schedule that stays pretty full, I have great intentions…and my execution is poor. *hangs head in shame*

However, since Fabio took the time to think up such phenomenal questions (see below), I will answer them. I encourage you to do the same down in the comments.

Note: I’ll be violating the rules here at More Cowbell by not moving this game forward . It’s OK…Fabio tagged so many other amazing people who are better torch carriers than I am.

Who got tagged?

There’s Karen Rought (The Midnight Novelist) who started this round by tagging Fabio.

Plus he tagged these other 10 people who will in turn ROCK this 11 Questions Game:

  1. Melinda VanLone
  2. Rachel Funk Heller
  3. Piper Bayard
  4. Leanne Shirtliffe
  5. August McLaughlin
  6. Lena Corazon
  7. Alicia and Roy Street
  8. Natalie Hartford
  9. Coleen Patrick
  10. Barbara McDowell

First, the rules (in case you want to start this up at your place):

  1. You must post the rules. :-)
  2. Answer the questions on your blog. Create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
  3. Tag eleven people and link to them.
  4. Let them know you’ve tagged them.

The 11 Questions:

1. What is your favorite historical period and why?

There are many periods I like to read about that I would NEVER want to live in. When I look at the changes to the status and fate of women over the last fifty years, it is mind-boggling.

I would NOT want to live:

  • in times when women had no rights, power or property.
  • before the invention of the Pill, which opened women’s lives up in ways they’d never previously imagined. We simply weren’t free to pursue our dreams with the same freedom before we were in charge of our reproduction.

I really don’t know how to answer this question, because I think I’ve lived in some great decades (I went to middle school, high school and college in the 80’s). Perhaps I’d have enjoyed living a decade earlier, before diseases like AIDS changed the way couples approach sex and before drugs like Crack and crystal meth became such a big problem.

I’m going with the 1970’s for $200, Fabio…I do LOVE to dance to Disco (but good LORD, they were fashion-challenged)!

2. List your top five favorite movies.

This is a MOST unfair question!! Since any choices will leave out 20 others, I’m going with the five (adult films) I watch the most often:

  • My Cousin Vinnie
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • The Princess Bride
  • The Shawshank Redemption
  • The Matrix

Remember, it’s all Sesame Street and Disney ALL THE TIME at my house!

3. Your house is on fire. Your loved ones–humans and pets–are already safe outside. They have your driver’s license and a flash drive with all your backups (files and all the media you own). You have time to save one more object. What would you get?

If I didn’t usually have it on my person, I’d say my cell phone, hands down. But, since I do, it would be my daughter’s baby book, a scrapbook of her first year pictures.

4. You can invite any three people in the world for a dinner–anyone alive. Who are your guests?

You see what I mean about these questions??? This would so depend on my mood!

Thought-provoking: Elie Wiesel, Maya Angelou and Glenn Beck
Raucous: Janet Evanovich, Whoopie Goldberg and Robin Williams
Writing-Focused: Stephen King, Toni Morrison and Christopher Vogler

I could go on and on, but I’ll stop here and encourage you to tell me your three.

5. Congress/the gods/smiling extraterrestrials said you can only have one type of food every meal for the rest of your life (they’ll supplement your diet with vitamin pills). Which food would you choose?

Freaking finally! An easy question…the potato. I could happily exist on the potato, be it baked, mashed, fried, chipped, whipped or au gratin FOREVER.

6. In an episode of “Friends”, they all reveal their freebie list: 5 celebrities with whom they can hook up without upsetting their partners. Who’s in yours?

This is another one of those changeable answers, but here goes. At one time or another, I’ve had a crush on Patrick Dempsey, Mel Gibson, Brendan Fraser, Harrison Ford and Matt Damon.

It doesn’t mean they haven’t swapped out for various other hotties (like Matthew McConaughey and Russell Crowe) at various times, but really I’ve never been tempted to get up close and personal with celebrities. After all, I’d have to deal with their celebrity!

7. (Huge spoiler alert.) Some people think the Hunger Games is bloody. In Harry Potter 6, fifteen characters die. In HP7, the body count is over fifty (see here). JK is rewriting the series, and she let you choose one character from any of the seven books to get a reprieve. Who would it be and why?

Definitely Dumbledore. I just loved that guy. He managed to be wise yet accessible; care-worn yet compassionate. In my humble opinion, he was one of the best characters ever written.

8. What’s your worst fear?

Well, y’all saw yesterday that I detest the dentist. Judging from the comments, that’s pretty universal. Let’s see, what else?? Well, a good part of why I work so hard is I’m terribly afraid of being homeless. And I’ve wigged about heights ever since Sgt-Major Coleman threw me off a cliff in college (ROTC course, rapelling unit). Those are my three biggies.

9. You can choose your own nickname, with an assurance that no one would ever mock you. Tell us your choice.

I’ve had a TON of nicknames over the years – you wouldn’t believe the ways that people used my maiden name. Plus I have a family nickname – no one who’s related would ever call me Jennifer or Jenny.

Hmmm…if SPARKY wasn’t so reminiscent of a dog, I think I’d like that one. It’s kinda perky. 🙂

10. What’s the best vacation you have ever had?

The summer trip my honey and I took almost 5 years ago to see my baby sister get married in Oregon, two days before we got married ourselves in the San Juan Islands.

11. Congress/the gods/smiling extraterrestrials said you must move to any fantasy or sci-fi setting (books, movies, videogames, rpgs) of your choice—permanently. Where would you go?

Oh, HELL… I am drawing a complete blank. Wherever it is, I want to be able to fly (under my own steam, not in a plane) or SCUBA dive whenever I want, for as long as I want, in a place with really cool views.

Just like Fabio, I’d love to know more about YOU! Consider yourself tagged – either in the comments or at your own blogs…I can’t wait to see your answers to these questions!

Jenny

  1. Dang! I booked a non-refundable flight. Tucked a fork in my pocket. Picked some of the neighbors flowers as a hostess gift.

And, you didn’t pick me for your dinner.

Now, what am I going to do with all this crap stuff, Sparky?

Great questions! Three people alive to eat dinner with? What a conundrum! I’ll take Historical Period instead for $200, Alex. I love the fashion, movies, and feel of the 1940’s. If it wasn’t for that stupid war, it would have been a perfect decade for me to drop into. By the way, I would have done anything to get an introduction to Cary Grant while there.

How about FEAR for $300? Hands down, my biggest fear is failure. I can track several times in my life when I did not attempt something I wanted to do because I didn’t want to fail at it. Which begs the question of why I’m going for the writing thing, huh?!! Well, fears should be faced. And I succeed a whole lot more in life when I risk it and take a chance! I’m learning. 🙂

    Thanks, Fabio & Jenny.

The 40’s were a most excellent decade (except for the world unrest) – the fashion was SASSY.

I think Fear of Failure makes all our top 5 lists. But it doesn’t rank above my unreasoning fear of being homeless or plummeting to my death from a great height.

I’m with you on The Princess Bride and the potato, Jenny. As Gloria would tell you, I’d pick Shemar Moore as my hook-up. YUM.

Some of those questions would really stump me, so glad I haven’t been tagged. 3 people for dinner? Nickname? Yikes.

Shemar Moore is yummy! Should I tell you that I met him when i was doing database work for The Young and the Restless? He is that cute in person, and very charming. But all those actors are SHORT.

Wow, he did ask good questions! Loved hearing your answers. I’ll answer a couple. In HP I’d wish back Sirrius and Dobby. And my three freebies hmmm. Joe Manganiello for sure. Augie from Covert Affairs (preferably wearing camo) and soccer player Christiano Ranaldo (not sure if that’s even his last name)

Oh dang…I didn’t even think to venture out to sports! I’ve always had a thing for Joe Montana. And David Beckham’s legs make me hot. OK, I might have to re-do my list. Y’all are making me think as much as Fabio did!

Thanks, Jillian, for mentioning sports celebrities. I thought everyone would include at least one athlete on their lists. They should be very fit, after all 🙂 Besides, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maria Sharapova, and others moonlight as models.

  5. Fabio did put some thought into those! I join you in the *hangs head in shame* department when it comes to responding to awards … it’s so much fun to receive them and the gratitude is there for sure … it’s so hard to find the time to get back to them …
I love historical fiction and fantasize about living during the Renaissance but then when you think about plumbing and hygiene issues…ewwww… maybe not. I’m loving it right here and now.
My three dinner guests? You, Natalie Hartford and Tameri Etherton. Oh, but then I’d want all the rest of our amazing bloggers to come too … we need to hold a WANA convention!
My favourite vacation – ALL of them! There hasn’t been a bad one yet and each one has been awesome in its own way.
Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer your questions, Jenny. It’s always fun learning more about each other!

Hey Sparky – love these, and love your answers! Would love to repsond, but it’s just TOO much thought for a Friday morning. Besides, these are the kind of things where you type, hit send, and then think, “Oh wait, I forgot to mention Chevy Chase on my hottie list!”

Okay, so sue me – I think he’s adorable.

  7. Yep. You’ll forever be Sparky to me from now on. It’s perfect.

  9. Okay, so I’m guessing that you voted for The Princess Bride. No worries. Did you see my post about Westley v. Ferris? Hahahaha. Check it out.

    BUT

You should know that Elie Wiesel was my Hebrew School teacher. Also my old rabbi is BFFs with Wolf Blitzer. For real. Just saying. Also, I watch Shawshank every time it is on. I wanted Andy Dufresne. Kelly had already picked him. Can we agree to live in the ’70s together. But can we be over 21? That would be the grooviest.

    • Jenny Hansen says:

Actually, after Westley edged out Rapunzel, he is on my $%*t list! But I adore that movie. OK, high five on being over 21 and dancing the night away in the 70’s. 🙂

I cannot believe you had a close personal relationship with Elie Wiesel. I admire him more than almost any other human being alive. I grew up near the Museum of Tolerance and it is a must-see if you’re ever in L.A. In fact, call me and we’ll go together.

Celebrity hook-up? Could I please have Jimmy Stewart or a younger Omar Sharif? I’ve never gotten over those crushes. If it has to be modern, then yes, it would be Matthew McConaughey.

Loved the Oregon story. We’re headed there for 12 days in June. If it’s as good as I think it’s gonna be, I may just stay.

Wow, these are some great questions! Loved your choice of movies, and good call on the potato. I’d have to say, for the Harry Potter movies, Fred Weasley. That one broke my heart. Dumbledore’s death, tragic as it was, had a purpose, IMO. Oh, and the cheat list? Johnny Depp (always no1), Chris Hemsworth are just a couple. Fun post!

    • Jenny Hansen says:

Yep – Fred Weasley got everyone I think. He was so young and the twins were SO carefree. (I’m getting verklempt just thinking about it!)

I don’t know why Johnny Depp doesn’t hit me in the hottie zone, but he just doesn’t. Amazing actor, and he’s got that dark coloring I like…maybe it’s the eyeliner in Pirates. I don’t know…

  17. Interesting post and comments, Jenny.

Favorite historical period – the 1950s. Best music ever, stable (relatively peaceful) world. Only drawback is how my black friends would have been treated.

Crush – no one’s ever come close to Sophia Loren.

Dinner – since I may get to do that with you and Piper and Donna at DFW, I’ll say Angela Peart, Leanne Shirtliffe (although she’d probably have me spitting out my food with laughter) and Renee Jacobson. Oops, I left out several hundred other dear writer friends.

Movies – Rio Bravo, Airplane, Sleepless in Seattle, Wait Until Dark & Air Force One.

Nickname – Skinny – no one’s ever called me that.

    Okay, enough from me.

    Like

    • Jenny Hansen says:

LOL on the “Skinny!” I’ve never been called that either. 🙂 I can see you as a man in the 1950’s, driving your groovy car and being happy with the peacefulness of the times.

Great questions and wonderful answers, Jenny. I love all kind of quizzes and even voluntarily participate some marketing researches 😛 So I’ll take your offer to join of the fun.

Favorite historical period – Like you, Jenny, I love history and reading about many periods but I wouldn’t want to live there. The risks with pregnancy and childbirth were huge.

Crush – Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp, Alex O’Loughlin and Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler.

One food for every meal – Wheat. I love cereals, bread, pasta and cookies. Or possibly chocolate. I could seriously eat it for every meal.

Dinner – Kristen Lamb, Holly Lisle & Stephen King. Three awesome writers with strong opinions. The discussion would be dazzling and I’d be happy to just listen.

Movies – The Fifth Element, X-Men, Inception, Pirates of the Carribbean & The Adjustment Bureau

Nickname – My English speaking friends call me Ree because my real name is quite hard to pronounce right.

I just hate being late to a party….well as far as historical period goes-I love early 20th century- to choose one decade it would have to be the 1920s, I’d be a flapper. I was in my 20s during the 1970’s an I loved it! Yes, worst fashion decade EVER. I had a maxi coat and a mini skirt with white go-go boots. I was stylin’!
Nicknames: My dad called me Marcia-Tarcia and in high school I was known as Rusty (for my auburn hair)
Crush: Johnny Depp, Matthew McConaughy, young George Clooney
One Food: Chocolate in all its many forms

There you go Sparky! Thanks for sharing!
