Avoid The Dreaded Writer’s Boo-Hoo Chair…

A Wednesday without a ROW80 Update…I’m feeling a bit verklempt. Like Wednesday has lost a bit of its twinkly sparkling magic. How about the rest of my ROW80 pals?

What? You’ve never heard of A Round of Words In 80 Days?? But it’s the writing challenge that knows you have a life! And it starts again in less than a WEEK…January 2nd, to be exact.

None of that is enough for you to click the link above? I see you’re gonna make me pull out the BIG GUNS. Fine.

I’m sponsoring the next round.

That means I get to slap around cheer on all the ROW80 participants. (Yeah, I’m looking at YOU…) Encourage them with their goals. Visit their blogs and drag them kicking and screaming away from their Boo-Hoo Chair when the writing week has got them wanting to watch Joanie Loves Chachi re-runs.

I know you’re enticed NOW. You’re jumping off December’s Slacker train and running to catch the first Writing Power Train you see. The ROW80 bandwagon will be pacing the Power Train, filled with a hootenanny of writers whooping and hollering.

Seriously.

We to like to party…engage in writing sprints and weekly blog hops, hang together over at the ROW80 hashtag on Twitter. I promise you will make new writer friends that are worth their weight in gold. (p.s. They won’t let you sit facing the wall in the Boo-Hoo Chair either).

OK, OK…stop nagging me, Jenny! How do I join?

Direct from the ROW80 website (and creator Kait Nolan’s genius brain) here’s the scoop:

  • There are 4 rounds a year, each running 80 days. (You don’t have to do all four.)
  • Your goal can be anything you like as long as it is measurable (e.g. number of words/pages, specified amount of time to spend on writing per day/week, number of pages edited, etc.–for more on what makes a measurable goal, see this post).
  • Once you have settled on a goal, you write it up on your blog (yes, you must have one) and link to it on the Goals Linky for the Round, which will be posted on the ROW80 Blog.
  • If your goal changes before the end of the 80 days, simply write up a new goals post and link to it on the latest check-in day.
  • There are check-ins twice a week on Wednesday and Sundayswhere you will update us the same way (you don’t have to check in both days if you’re busy).
  • On Twitter we use a hashtag of #ROW80 if you wanna come hang out
  • And if you happen to find us after a round has begun, just write up your goals post and hop on in whenever. We’re a friendly bunch.
  • Be sure to grab the ROW80 badge from the sidebar on the ROW80 Blog. I’ve placed it at the bottom of this post so you can see how cute it is.

Do you like writing challenges (or hate ’em)? Have you tried ROW80 yet? If not, what has kept you from it? If so, what did you like the most? Do you have goals for the New Year that you’d care to share? You know we’re always  happy to hear about you here at More Cowbell!

  1. Hi girlie! So the whole linky thing…

Right now the one that’s up is for the end of the last round – will the next one be up on January 2? Is that when we’d post our blogs with our goals?

    Thanks!

Woot! Count me in. I’m a newbie, though, just watching/reading from the sidelines over the past few months. I had the same questions as Myndi. When do I put out my post, and how do I link it to the ROW80 site? Are the goals only writing goals, or can they also include exercise and blogging goals?

I’m so exciting that I get to start ROW-ing with you as my mentor, Jenny! 😀

You can check in twice a week if you want – some people do, some do it once a week. If you do the once a week route, for your blog I’d pick Sunday because your Watercooler Wednesday posts are so popular.

Others such as Natalie Hartford have just posted two blogs on Wednesday…it’s really a personal preference. The rest of the answers are down in my answer to Karen. Oh, and you know several other sponsors too. 🙂 Our pal Gene Lempp for example…

I was already committed. But if I hadn’t been, you would have had me at “hootenanny.” Who can say no to that?!! Great cheerleading already. 🙂

  7. Hey Jenny, got your post this morning. I’ve been off the grid for the past week. Been sick.

Anyway, Angela Peart did a beautiful blog about ROW80 last week as my guest, but I still don’t know how to join. Is there a list on Kait Nolan’s site? Are we assigned a ROW partner or something? I mean, who are we accountable to, besides ourselves naturally? Monday will be here before we know it and I want to be onboard.

Just need a little direction girl. It would be much appreciated. Thanks. 🙂

It is frightening how much that child resembles me today. This week. This month. And this morning? Kristen Lamb made me download HootSuite. MADE ME. And I paid her, yes, paid her, for the privilege! You want kicking and screaming, Jenny? Look no further.

I’m curious what made you pick Hootsuite over TweetDeck (I know she likes TweetDeck better and there are some nifty guides for that).

Also, once you get used to it, I think you will really, really like it. (Don’t throttle me.)

      • Not to be a jumper inner and all – – too late! But I downloaded HootSuite and deleted TweetDeck (also per Kristen’s advice). I was having a lot of problems with TweetDeck. HootSuite is awesome (no bugs) and easy to manage.

  9. I love Row80 and was working up my goals last night! 🙂 I’ve not participated in the writing sprints but think that would be fun.

    Looking forward to January 2!!!

I’m a little embarrassed to be seen on the ROW 80 list, considering that I reached about 1% of my goals in the latest round. But if you’re taking away the Boo-Hoo chair, I won’t have a place to sit, so I might as pick myself up and keep a-going.

(P.S. The problem isn’t Joanie Loves Chachi. It’s Bookworm.)

Oooooh, I LOVE Bookworm! And who cares if you made 1% last time? Not us, that’s for sure!

We’re excited that you learned what DIDN’T work (which is part of ROW80) so that this time you’ll try a new tack. Go you for digging out those titanium writer’s panties and strapping ’em back on!!

  15. I’m completely new to the concept of ROW80 but it sounds really interesting! I’d love to join. I’ll have to read up on it some more, though, so I’m not such a newbie come January. Are there some examples of goals that other people have chosen in the past? Just curious what the standard is (even though I know this is supposed to be all about personalized goal setting).

You can go to the search on the right sidebar under category and look up ROW80 and you’ll see my goals back in the oldest posts and my updates. I’ve never made a ROW80 page but most people do (I’ve got a toddler…it’s mostly a no time thing for me).

Gene Lempp has a great ROW80 page, as does Natalie Hartford and Tiffany A. White. I believe Raelyn Barclay has one on her site too, but I’ll let her chime in. 🙂

  19. Great “get us kicked off” post, Jenny. That little boy in the pic sure isn’t having a good day. Heh, heh. I never wailed like him last ROW80 round, but I’ll admit to some pouting. I’ll be back next round to act on what I’ve learned works better for me. Bring on the changes!

Okay, I wasn’t going to do it this time because I did so poorly in the last round and I feel SOOOO guilty because I was never able to find time to hang with all you other Row peeps. I met Raelyn last time (*hi, Raelyn!*), but hardly ever had time to visit her. In fact I hardly ever had time to visit, tweet or FB anyone!
SO – I’m in for ROWnd 1-2012 and my biggest goal is to get more diligent about socializing and supporting. I support and love you all in my heart, but if I don’t say anything or do anything, who would know? I always set up a ROW80 page if anyone needs one to look at! On my way to do that now. Thanks, Jenny, girl!
