Blog Love For The Day: Pimp or Promote–Round 2!

Friday is always about love here at More Cowbell. Whatever form that takes…

THIS Friday it’s about love and appreciation from me to you. Once again, I’m taking a page out of Chuck Wendig’s book and throwing open the doors of the comments section for one of the following:

  • Tell us about one of your projects that you’re excited about – a hobby, a blog, a book, a new direction your writing is taking you. You decide. Just tell us all about it in the comments! The rest of us will jump in and “ooooh and coo” at you, and potentially offer you tons of unsolicited advice about how to promote your project further.
Note: Try not to lose your head over this in the length department – I don’t want to have to edit your glory.
  • Pimp out somebody else’s work – this can be a favorite author, blogger, post or book you’ve read, a wonderful teacher or just someone who had profound influence on you as a writer or a person. The rest of us will jump in and “ooooh and coo” over this too.

I know, I know…you’re a well-mannered bunch (*snort*) that restrains yourselves from shameless self-promotion or pimpage on somebody else’s blog. But today you’re invited…and not just because I’ve been under the covers sick all week. I want to hear about what’s exciting in your life today. :-)

To start the pimping off right, I’m going to heap compliments on a collection of blogs that rocked my world over the past few weeks.

Jami Gold continues to knock my socks off – this time with Can You Fast Draft?

NakedEditor, Tiffany Lawson Inman’s guest post at Writers In The Storm was superb: Don’t Let Thrillers Hog The Freezer!

If you’ve ever raised kids or hung out with one for very long, this Message With A Bottle post will make you laugh your face off. Check out how this Stay-At-Home-Dad entertains himself through the challenges of staying home with his kid!

Also on the Stay-At-Home-Parent front, I just discovered Give Me A Valium With My Latte, a mommy blog like no other. (Thanks to Diana Murdock!)

Renee Schuls-Jacobson moved me to tears with this confessional on being a “Mean Girl” way back when. I can only say BRAVO to her for turning into the warm, caring person we know today and sharing her story. I found it when I explored her wonderful blog and saw this link.

Some of you might know about my Risky Baby Business series that runs here at More Cowbell on Saturdays. It’s about pregnancy and babies, particularly those that are in the highest risk category like mine. I did a post on miscarriage about a month ago and came across this beautiful post in my research. I warn you, it’s a tear-jerker about post-partum depression in moms who lose babies.

Often I find author interviews somewhat “meh” but I learned a TON from Stacy Green’s interview with Allison Brennan – you must read this!

Note: Next Monday is going to be VERY exciting here at More Cowbell!

  • Stacy Green is redeeming her Life List Milestone Party prize with a guest post from yours truly at her fantastic blog, Turning the Page.
  • I’ll be splitting my time between Stacy and the Bayard/Lamb 2012 Campaign on the 14th when Piper and her space-saving running mate, The Lambo, take center stage here at More Cowbell!

Here’s the Bayard/Lamb Campaign’s creative solution to the EU Bailout, if you’d like to get a sense of them as candidates. I’ll also be asking for thier stance on important issues such as health care, jobs and their favorite types of Undies.

Speaking of Undies, I’d be remiss for not giving a shout-out to the #Pantypeeps who’ve had me in stitches for several weeks now: K.B. Owen, Natalie Hartford, Angela Peart, Lena Corazon, Nicole Basaraba and Barbara McDowell. David Walker has even joined the fray. All of their blogs are Ah-Mazing! 🙂

Now for the Promote Category!

For those of you who are new here, below are the posts that were the best-loved by “The More Cowbell Posse” (aka the amazing readers that hang out here with me).

Enjoy. 🙂

All right, it’s your turn. Rev those engines…Let’s see your best pimp or promote!! (Or as Chuck Wendig would say, “You. Comments. Go!”)

Happy Friday!
Jenny

  1. K.B. Owen says:

Hi, Jenny! Thanks for the shout-out! You guys are the coolest peeps ever to hang out with. Hope you’re feeling better!

I have two things to share, one about myself and one about someone else. I know a lot of you are familiar with Marcia Richards, but if you’re not, head over to her blog: marcia-richards.com. It has humor, history, nostalgia, pop culture…all put together in a very engaging writing style. I’m especially grateful for how generous she has been – she let me borrow bits from her posts TWICE in the past few weeks! Thanks, Marcia!

I had a crazy-good thing happen to me on Wednesday this week. Usually I’m grateful for viewing stats that get up to the 80s for daily hits (although it’s not always up there). During the day Wednesday, I was SHOCKED to find that views of my belly laughs post was climbing rapidly: 289, then 560, then 1,000! It finally peaked at over 1,600 views. Holy crap on a cracker! I thought someone was digitally pulling my leg. Turns out a couple of StumbleUpon users had picked up my post and featured it on their pages. Those StumbleUpon peeps must have huge followings, and I’m really grateful! Of course, I’m back to the normal stats since then, which look really teeny on the current bar graph, LOL. But what a fun ride!

Thanks for the pimp-and-promote opportunity, Jenny. Have a great weekend!

  2. Hey Jenny, I love to see new posts from you in my early morning blogcheck. It’s becoming an addiction and a much better start to the day than checking the newspapers *gag…eck* !
K.B., your belly laugh posts deserve all those hits. Hilarious! And you’re right about Marcia Richards! She’s one of my AWE-mazing “WANAsistas” (not to leave out one “bro”, Kerry Meacham.) Blame Kristen Lamb for getting this gang together! I want to promote them all but the list is too long so slip on over and check out my blog roll where they are all listed.
My novel, The Bridge Club, is finally on Amazon Kindle Direct http://amzn.to/v2rrpG with a new cover (thanks for your help, Carrie Spencer!) since iUniverse owns the cover art on the original. Also had to slightly change the name to The Bridge Club, a novel.
As a newbie at this publishing game, which edition do I promote? Do I give them equal time? Does it matter? Any and all advice gratefully received!
Thanks for this Jenny – hope you are feeling better and ready to rock the birthday Conga Line!

  3. Hi Jenny!

Thank you for the shout out. That mean girl post was among the hardest pieces I’ve ever written, so it is with great trepidation that I accept your cowbell. I’m not proud of my actions back in the day, but I am proud that I was able to exorcize some old demons at Kelly K’s blog. I hope people will also visit my happier posts at my blog at http://rasjacobson.com Have a great weekend!

Now, on to you. I know, I owe you because I gave you the buggers this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JENNY!!!! You’re now officially outed. Teach you to call me a biatch. 😉

Jenny, what a great set of links. Here I am on Friday with nothing to do (that’s a lie). Now I’ve got all kinds of cool stuff to read.

I’ll pimp myself (of course). Today’s blog is about the New Mexico State Penitentiary Riot and later stories of the abandoned prison being haunted. I titled it The Devil’s Weekend:

    http://catierhodes.com/2011/11/11/the-devils-weekend/

I’ll also pimp my good friend Stacy Green. Her Thriller Thursday posts (about true crime and/or paranormal) just get better and better. This week, she talked about Clara Harris who ran over her cheating husband (three times) in the parking lot of a Houston Hilton.

Thriller Thursday: Broken Heart or Calculated Murder?

    Thanks for the opportunity. 😀

  9. Good morning, Jenny! First of all, thanks for the mention! I so appreciate it!

There are so many amazing writers in our Twitterverse, it would take me days to list them, but I DO think about them all the time! One writer I wanted to promote is Richard Goodship, author of The Camera Guy. Right now he is on an incredible journey with his novel, a road that I’m certain many of us dream of being on. I’ve read the book, and I was really impressed. Apparently the higher powers that be were impressed as well, because The Camera Guy is being made into a movie! I’d love to see a blog about the process…perhaps we can convince him.

Anyway, my hats off to those I follow! You all rock!

My faves are More Cowbell, KB Owen, Gene Lempp, all my WANA-sistas, The Creative Penn and all my Life List Club writers…every single time I visit their blogs I find something that either makes me laugh, shiver, cry, say ‘oooh’, or learn. For WANA check out #WANA711 on Twitter and for Life List Club writer’s check Jenny’s or my blogroll.
I have an interview today(admittedly interviews don’t get much in the way of views but I like them anyway) with a friend who entered poetry to a book of essay and poetry collections. If you’re interested in a great place to publish a small piece of work and a publishing company that works to empower women and some of the proceeds goes to women’s charities, then please come visit today. Secondly, I just got back a critique on a short fiction piece I entered in a Women on Writing contest. I had made the first cut in the contest and now waiting to see if I made the top 20. Anyway, there was nothing critical in the critique except a typo! They loved it all! Very exciting for my first contest.

I’d like to pimp out friend and wana#711 sista Tameri Etherton’s A Cup of Tea and Sorcery blog. http://tamerietherton.com/ Normally she’s one of the most upbeat, sweetest people on the blogging planet but last week her post on Miscommunication and the sometimes fragile mother/daughter bond made me cry. If you want to laugh, Check out Honey Badger’s You Tube video on Tameri’s blog. I promise that you’ll come away with a new attitude…

For me? I’m on target with my self-imposed deadline for Donald Maass. Ooooh Jenny, you need to send to that sparkly new agent of his once you complete your memoir. I first must pimp both Sanemoms.com and Mommyshorts.com because both of the women over there have been incredibly generous and besides they have great blogs, albeit different. As for promoting myself, I have a musical written with Laura Hall (Of “Whose Line Is It Anyway” fame) called “Room to Grow” that needs backers and a book, “Searching For My Wand”, a novel that I hope to publish before Christmas. Yup. I’m saying YOU ROCK!

Lets see…current projects? Well, I am excited about the current class I’m teaching – I am learning so much from these writers and about myself throughout the teaching process. Very cool experience. So cool in fact that I have decided to teach an advanced version of Triple Threat Behind Staging A Scene, in January.

My brain is a churnin’ with new ideas for future classes and new editing services that I can provide for you hotshot writers 🙂

It’s pretty amazing I have any space in there for anything else, but I am also churnin’ on a book idea for myself…I can’t say what it is yet because it involves me and many hours in the swimming pool to really see if I can pull it off. My first splash down will be tomorrow.

I know, I know, totally strange and criptic, right? Teehee!

I have to give a shout out to my mom ( Margie Lawson, creater of Lawson Writer’s Academy and the EDITS System) for pushing the writing world into focus in the past few years. And i have to thank an ex-jerk-face-boyfriend for being the ass that he was and providing the motivated leap back to Colorado for me to find myself again.

But most of all I have to give super-big-time-props to my hubby, Sean, for supporting me in leaving the day job (that provided free health benefits and a steady paycheck) so that I could teach, edit, and write full time.

I feel very blessed to be able to stretch my creative legs in the writing world and to have access to all of you wonderful people. Kudos to you.

Exciting and nail-biting times!

Hi birthday girl! You know, you can rock that B-Day spirit on past the day. Great post and I so hope you are feeling better. Thanks also for the fab shout out! Pantypeeps forever!!!

So many of the blogs I love have been shouted out already. I will forever send praise and love for my #WANA711 peeps! They are not only a go-to and steady support, but also great to learn from (like Kerry Meacham, our resident guy, who inspired me to do ROW80 and to get the steady WIP writing done). I’ll also shout out the blog of mystery writer Elizabeth Spann Craig. She is the goddess of finding and tweeting great writing links and her weekly mash-ups keep me busy reading and learning.

As for me, I’ll shout out my getting back to work on my first novel (yeah!) after being sucked into a whirlwind of the day work world. For a lifelong pantser, the plotting and outlining work I’m now learning to do made it easy to jump right back in. Dare I say good stuff? Hope I don’t lose my pantser card for joining the plotter dark side. 🙂

Two projects, really. The thriller WIP is “this close” to the finish line! The gut-wrenching slash-and-burn rewrites done, now 3/4 through the next-to-last edits, with eye to final sweet-tweaks over Thanksgiving weekend, woot! And then on to my editor & first-readers for some ash-kicking comments (“what were you THINKING!?”).

Second project is a “dramedy” musical “KURVES, THE MUSICAL” co-written with my theatrical partner-in-crime, 14 original songs fully orchestrated, cast of 8. First read-thru with cast set for Nov 29, rehearsals start Jan 2, performance at Rialto Theater in Denison, TX first weekend of February.

Barbara McDowell has great pop gossip and fun flashbacks on her blog. Okay, before this gets too long and you have to edit me, I’ll stop. But seriously, there are so many good blogs to pimp!

Seriously…sniff…I can’t say it enough how grateful I am to have found such a warm, wonderful, and caring blogging community (not to mention funny as all hell). My experience since taking Kristen’s class has been astounding and I can no longer imagine my world without y’all in it. And the weird thing, I know we all reside in different areas of the planet but…in a lot of ways…you all feel like my BFF next door and I love that!
I definitely want to give a shout out to the WANA711 peeps (you can find them all in my Circle of Friends) cause they all rock. And honestly, all the WANA blogs out there rock after Kristen has had her “way” with them *insert evil laugh*! We are all drinking the WANA kool-aid and liking it!
As for projects etc to announce, I don’t have much to say. I am into Chapter 2 of James Scott Bell’s book on plotting and structure and I love it. I am also reading the Sweet Potato Queens for fun and LOVING it as well. Looking forward to getting into the plotting part of my book but also not rushing it as I know I have sooo much to learn yet…trusting the process…
Just havin’ an all around good time on the blog, on everyone else’s blog (as I, along with my dear ol’ hubby, like to blogjack on a regular basis), and on discovering the joys of Twitter.
And…here’s to you Jenny! For being quite simply an uberliciously fantabulous person! The world is a brighter place with you in it so Happy Birthday and here’s to YOUR best year yet!
    HUGS!
    Word….

Thanks, Nat!! I can already tell it will be a great year! How do you go wrong with all this Blog-Love in the world? I agree on the WANA Kool-Aid…I’ve been drinking it and I love it. And Kristen definitely helped me to see that I could embrace my inner Cowbell and make a go of this blog thing.

p.s. I’m soooo glad you’re loving the Sweet Potato Queens. I thought you would. 🙂

I know I’ve been quiet, but I love you just the same! I hope to catch up on my favorite blogs this holiday weekend. Luvs
