Ode To A Taco – by Sonia G Medeiros

I’m excited to welcome Sonia Madeiros to More Cowbell today. It’s Lovin’ Friday and I’m just basking in sooo many of my favorite things with this post – it’s got Sonia, great humor and TACOS. Yummy.

Plus, I love that we started the week with an Ode To Garter String Knickers and we’re ending with an Ode To A Taco.

What symmetry! Plus, all of you with minds as dirty as mine get a nice snicker out of it. 🙂

Don’t forget to read to the end of the post to see who won Jody Hedlund’s book giveaway from her amazing NaNoWriMo-friendly post on Wednesday.

Take it away Sonia…

Welcome to another Life List Club Friday. I’m thrilled to be at Jenny Hansen’s awesome, most cowbelly blog. Her writing posts are fabulous and her Risky Baby Business series is one of my very favorites. My guest post has nothing to do with babies…unless tacos can help you make babies. Maybe they can. Who knows?

Only the taco knows…

Once, long ago, I thought tacos only came in crunchy taco shells with ground beef, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream and usually came from Taco Bell unless you made ’em at home on taco night.

Oh how innocent I was. My darling husband put an end to that when he introduced me to the street taco. I think the conversation went something like this:

Me, jabbing the air over a plate of several little somethings wrapped in teensy-weensy little corn tortillas: “What’re those?”

Hubby: “Tacos.”

“Those arent’ tacos. Where’s the refried beans?”

“Right there. On the side.”

“Yeah, but where’s the lettuce? And what’s that green stuff?”

“You don’t need lettuce. And that’s cilantro.”

“I don’t like cilantro.”

“Just put salsa on one and take a bite.”

“Isn’t cilantro like parsley or something? That’s a garnish. You know, coriander are cilantro seeds, which is weird because I like coriander.”

“Just take a bite.”

I take a bite.

“Well?”

“Mmmph mmm. Oh my- mmph. Wow. They’re really mmmmph good. The cilantro mmmmakes it. And the salsa…”

So now, I’m a hopeless taco addict, waiting around for my next taco fix. Scouting for little taco restaurants and trucks. Sneaking off to shady taco dealers…

“Hey, man, you got the goods?”

Flashes me a heavy, foil wrapped packet from which smells divine.

“Salsa in there?”

“Salsa’s extra.”

“Since when?”

“You want the tacos or not?”

“Ok. Fine! Just gimme the tacos…and some salsa.”

And those little bits of heaven wrapped in little corn tortillas are only the beginning. There’s a whole world of taco delights to explore. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve nothing against the crunchy species of taco, especially with lots and lots of salsa but the street variety is my taco of choice.

Would I trade my kingdom for a taco? Probably not…unless we’re talking handmade tortillas and chipotle salsa, then all bets are off. In any case, I say:

Today is a good day for a taco!

What about you? Any food you didn’t grow up with that you’re mad for now? Or any food you’re just mad for, period?

Question from Jenny: Do you think we need to stage a taco intervention for Sonia? You know enquiring minds LOVE to know these sorts of things here at More Cowbell!

  2. Hi Sonia, I love anything that has to do with food. So your post is fabulous! The only downside is now I’m salivating and it’s 9 am. I am foodie with a penchant for exotic spices, the more the better, and can you throw a little more salsa, and cilantro on that? It’s too early to start me talking about my food habit. 🙂

Dang, now I’m hungry! We munch LOTS of cilantro and parsley and fresh basil at this house–hadn’t thought of it on tacos. (scribbling on to-do list…)

Awesome post, Sonia! I grew up near San Francisco, and when I was young my dad would sometimes stop in the Mission District in SF (historically the Latino part of town) and pick up the most amazing, wonderful, phenomenal tacos and quesadillas. I love eating them with meat like tripe and lengua (yes, that is right, tongue) — so delish and tasty. Okay, I’m officially craving tacos now, so I might have to go and seek some out. 😀

Awesome! I’ve only just discovered tacos but the tacos I know are ground beef with mashed mixed beans taco mixture tomato sauce and scooped up with scoop tortilla chips. Kids love it. I fancy your tacos though 🙂

    • That sounds pretty good. I had no idea about street tacos growing up. And I do still love a good crunchy taco. Or we’ll make a taco salad with broken up tortilla chips. That’s wonderful too.

    Sonia,

There was a restaurant my honey and I used to love before the chef retired and every Wed night, he’d do tacos – he’d have a tri-tip and mashed potato or a Chicken/shrimp with hot mango chutney, or a grilled fish with garlic aioli. Always three taco and each one was different. It was amazing!!!

Now all I can think about are REAL tacos (like the ones you mentioned).

There is a place not far from here that makes them like that. I’ve tried every meat option – even the cow tongue. All of them are soo good.

Such a cute taco story 🙂 I discovered beans a few years ago; I’d never had them growing up and was so baffled as to how that happens once I realized how amazing they are.
