Can We Have A Little More Cowbell Over Here?

It’s Lovin’ Friday here at More Cowbell, where we alternate between a post about something I love and Life List Friday (which I also love).

I had someone ask me the other day where I came up with the name of this blog. Though I can hardly conceive of it, I know there are still a very few of you who have not experienced one of the Top 10 Funniest of All Time skits from Saturday Night LiveMore Cowbell. This is definitely something I love!

Note: NBC pulled the copyright on the actual skit so this is a great fascimile.

How about that Will Farrell, huh? That guy can play a mean cowbell. Even with that 70’s hair and his belly just a-hanging out from under that hideous shirt, Will gives a 200% Master Cowbell Performance (and explores the hell out of his studio space).

And Christopher Walken? Fuggedaboutit. He OWNS his studio space in this clip, as “THE Bruce Dickinson.” He might look ghostly in this version, but he rocks.

Like the SNL skit, at the heart of it all this blog is about celebrating the unique and giving your “more” to everything you do.

More creativity.
More fun.
More discussion.
More variety.

In the interest of promoting all of the above, here’s some of the links that really rocked my world this week. Hopefully they’ll ring your cowbell like they did mine.

More Cowbell Mash-up

My Kindle was a hot disorganized mess before I read Amanda Hackwith’s post about Organizing Your Kindle Book Collection. My evil OCD twin has built a shrine in Amanda’s honor.

Ever wished you knew more about Bayard & Holmes? These two rabble-rousers accepted a blog award with humor and grace in What Don’t We Know About You? I walked away feeling like I knew both of them better (and became even more convinced that Piper and I are cousins).

I just got around to reading Susan Bischoff’s wonderful post, Author Blogs – Solid Platform, Wrong Audience on Kristen Lamb’s blog. (It only posted on September 30th for crying out loud.) It was a fantastic reminder that people need to blog about a multitude of things, all of which relate to the person writing the blog. It prompted me to write the following on a Post-it in fat black marker: Us + Readers = Platform.

After running after Baby Girl this week, I had a huge belly laugh over Leanne Shirtliffe’s post on Ironic Mom, Children In Cages.

Prepare to be fascinated and thoroughly engaged by Gene Lempp’s post on the Roots of Drama, titled Designing from Bones – Theatrical Roots.

As I prepare for NaNoWriMo next month, TWO posts caught my eye.

#1 – Procrastinating Writers5 NaNoWriMo Posts You Don’t Want To Miss asks what you’d rather have at the end of November — 50,000 words or a draft of your novel? Kristen Lamb has been asking this same question for a few weeks now and it’s got me thinking.

#2 – Larry Brooks at StoryFix has a 31 day series for October called Nail Your NaNoWriMo. I’ve given you post #1 – as of today he’s on post #15. If you are a writer who’s considering the NaNoWriMo challenge, go run to StoryFix and catch up on all 15 posts.

Finally, as we enter the holiday season, Natalie Hartford wrote a timely post called, I’m In A Battle With Jeans. Between the post and the comments, you’re guaranteed both a smile AND some weight loss tips. 🙂

p.s. If you could give a rat’s a$$ about how your jeans fit, here is a recipe from Chuck Wendig that will tantalize your tastebuds with sausage, apples, and pasta in brown butter sauce. I don’t know about you but he had me at sausage…

Whether you’re spending your weekend working, parenting, coaching, writing, exercising, worshipping, or not doing much of anything, I encourage you to really explore your studio space.

What great posts have rocked your world this week? Are you doing NaNoWriMo (and if so, please share your name so we can be “buddies”? Any weekend plans I should be jealous of? Enquiring minds always want to know here at More Cowbell!

Love the linkys – looks like I got some reading ahead! I can’t wait to find out about organizing my kindle and then I am heading over to read Children in Cages – sounds very much up my alley. LOL!
I am not doing NaNoWriMo – I can hardly handle outlining let alone writing 50K in a month. My hats off to those who do – wow!
This weekend we are off to the camp (as usual – almost every weekend in the fall we hit the camp). We have a couple of friends coming out Saturday morning for a large, all-day ATV run, lunch on the trail etc and likely some beer and cards in the evening. Should be fun. Sunday hubby is starting the installation of the composting toilet (I am sooo excited) and I’ll be working on blog posts and WIP!
    Thrilling, eh?! LOL!
Thanks so much for the shout out!! Woot woot…Happy WEEKEND!

OK, definitely jealous of your weekend plans! Fall weather, friends, ATV’s and beer…does’t get much better than that. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I think ROW80 is the perfect place to get started, and don’t you be worrying yourself about NaNo (I’ll talk you into it next year 🙂 ).

Thanks, Jenny, for the shout. And I too loved the Kindle one and Piper’s. Looking forward to checking out the rest!

I MUST check out your mash ups. I am planning on doing NaNoWriMo, so I’ll be reading the advice on the posts you linked to cause that’s my big writing worry right now. I wish I had a better outline in mind so I could feel ready to rock and roll with the writing of the story. Hoping to use a day off and prepare this. I’m glad so many of my fave bloggers are participating because I’ll need to seek you guys out for a burst of reality and relaxation from nanowrimo. LOL. Bring it on, November!

Bring it on indeed, Jess! I’m “jennyhansen” for all of you looking to buddy up. I’m going to be catching up on Larry Brooks posts too – they’re so exciting for me in this lead up time. Right on – some of my pals are doing NaNo!

The SNL skit of More Cowbell was one of my all-time favorites! I don’t care how many times I watch it I laugh until I cry. Just imagine shooting that thing and trying to keep a straight face! Thanks for the wonderful links. I will check them out. I’m on the fence about NaNoWriMo. I’ve only done it once, and although grueling, well worth it. You may just inspire me to throw my name in the hat!

I know, Annie…I do the same thing. No one rocks the 70’s outfit (with belly flashing) like
      Will Farrell. 🙂

Annie, I’ve never won NaNo. Not once. And I don’t expect this year to be any different. Between my birthday and Thanksgiving in November, there’s just a lot going on. What I have done each year is increase my total output. Anything that you get written is more than you had before you started. At least that’s how I look at it.

That’s one of the all-time best skits, Jenny. And thanks for the great links to read. I’m definitely going to try Chuck’s recipe. Jeans fitting be damned!

  9. Great Links, as usual! Do you think you are a connector or a maven? Maybe a little of both! You sure do know a lot of people and I think you also know tons of information. More Cowbell rocks!

You are a sweetie pie, Jessica. I’m definitely a maven (pathologically helpful). There’s rumors among my friends that I’m also a salesman. Especially if they’ve attended conferences with me and I sashay them up to editors and agents to pitch.

Thanks for the compliment! I needed one this week, and I got a few just with this post. AWESOME Friday presents. 🙂

Yep, even with a recipe that man can make me laugh. He’s a gem. You can find his recipes if you look around TerribleMinds. Perhaps we should all suggest a recipe e-book??

  12. Great links!

My husband actually owns a shirt that reads, “I need more cowbell” with a picture of Christopher Walken. Yeah, we’re not in the group who doesn’t know where it came from. That’s one of our favorite quotes in Etherton House.

Love the video. Every. Single. Time.

I love that SNL clip so hard! Great linky mashup, too. I’ve got Chuck’s recipe bookmarked and ready to try sometime in the next couple of weeks (sausage and butter sauce? How can anyone refuse that?), and I am collecting NaNo posts like a magpie hoarding pretty shinies. Once the buddy system is up on the new NaNo website, I’ll shoot you a request.

  16. Dang! NBC claimed the material before I got a chance to see Will Farrell play his mean cowbell. 😦 Thanks for explaining the meaning behind your blog title–I was clueless. Probably still am. LOL
