Blog Love for the Day: Pimp or Promote!

Whether it’s the highs and lows of dating or relationship humor, Friday is always about love here at More Cowbell. Whatever form that takes…

THIS Friday it’s about love and appreciation from me to you. I’m taking a page out of Chuck Wendig’s book and throwing open the doors of the comments section for one of the following:

  • Tell us about one of  your projects that you’re excited about – a hobby, a blog, a book, a new direction your writing is taking you. You decide. Just tell us all about it in the comments! The rest of us will jump in and “ooooh and coo” at you, and potentially offer you tons of unsolicited advice about how to promote your project further. Note: Try not to lose your head over this in the length department – I don’t want to have to edit your glory.
  • Pimp out somebody else’s work – this can be a favorite author, blogger, post or book you’ve read, a wonderful teacher or just someone who had profound influence on you as a writer or a person. The rest of us will jump in and “ooooh and coo” over this too.

I know, I know…normally it’s BAD FORM to do shameless self-promotion or pimpage on somebody else’s blog. But today you’re invited…and not just because it’s been a crazy week for me. I want to hear about what’s exciting in your life today. 🙂

To start this pimpage party off, I’m going to heap compliments on two of my favorite bloggers, Kristen Lamb and Chuck Wendig. These two are hip, funny and informative – a winning trifecta in my book.

Since Kristen (aka The Lambo) turned me on to Chuck’s blog (and like 800 other things I needed to know), she gets to be first. Kristen is my social media maven. I highly recommend you visit her blog and let her be your maven too.

She posts on a broad range of topics but mostly about writing, blogging and social media. She slips in a variety of shiny jewels on her Free-For-All Fridays too, but the other topics are her mainstay. Especially if you’re new to Twitter or just starting a blog, Kristen will show you the ropes.

My fave posts of hers… God, where to start. *whining* Do I only get to pick three? Fine, here goes:

I could link to 20 more posts but I’ve gushed enough and it will mean more to have your own discovery journey. (The minute you’re done posting your comment here, run over there!) Besides being funny and informative, Kristen is loyal, driven, and a damn nice lady.

You might also you pick up copies of her best-selling books We Are Not Alone–The Writer’s Guide to Social Media and Are You There, Blog? It’s Me, Writer . Both books are ON SALE for $4.99!!!! And both are recommended by the hottest agents and biggest authors in the biz.

On to Writing Prince Wendig…

Chuck Wendig’s voice manages to be unique, profane and kind…usually all at the same time. His writing advice is stellar – practical and HUGELY helpful. His posts about his new baby will make you snort your coffee. Put your cup down and swallow that sip you just took before clicking any of the links below.

Some of my favorite Chuck posts:

His books on writing are a treat to read (as long as you don’t mind foul language used with razor-sharp accuracy – I don’t). I have both of the books below and can vouch that they are gems:

Try: CONFESSIONS OF A FREELANCE PENMONKEY — $4.99 at Amazon (US), Amazon (UK), B&N, PDF

And: 250 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WRITING — $0.99 at Amazon (US), Amazon (UK), B&N, PDF

As Chuck says, “You. Comments. Go.” The More Cowbell Party Line is now open!

Shameless pimp for someone else? I am riveted to Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s Blog http://kriswrites.com/ a riveting must-read on the business of writing, and how it’s changing.

Check out WITS FB for the link to her FACEBOOK with the AWESOME cover (stories contained therein deserve an awesome cover. I signed up to TWEEET and brought up GLORIA RICHARD/Author FB this week. Jenny, I LOVE this!! To me, it has “Friday” all over it! I’m just going to throw Elizabeth Spann Craig’s name out there. Elizabeth creates these Twitter mash-ups that I can only describe as mini-writing-conferences. Her latest book, Finger Lickin’ Friday, looks funny and engaging! She’s so generous!

Also, P.W. Creighton (@ravenrequiem13) is a super supportive Twitter pal. He always RT’s and shouts out to his friends. Plus, he recently signed a deal for his first book!! Yay, Phillip!!

I have a whole crew of blogger friends I would love to shout out, but I’ll throw a few heavy hitters: my crit. partner Wendy P. Miller, my dear friends Jody Hedlund and Keli Gwyn, the hilarious Katie Ganshert, and all-around-awesome gal, Jessica Patch.

As you can see, I could do this all day, but I’ll leave off with this. I’m on track to completely finish my novel and proposal by the end of next week. Woo-hoo!

Have a terrific weekend, Jenny! Love you!!

Congrats on finishing!! I have a very hard time with finishing so it is an incredible milestone in my book. I’ll have to check out Wendy and Katie…you’ve already turned me on to Jody, Keli and Jessica.

I love Phillip (@RavenRequiem13) – he is sooo supportive. I’ve had so much death and mayhem lately I haven’t been on Twitter as much. I did not know he got an agent! Woo-hooooo!!!!

As for Elizabeth Craig (and her Writers Knowledge Base – link found in the Right sidebar), I can’t say enough great things about her. She was my very first Twitter friend.

Okay, this is awesome. On my “pimp myself” list–this week I butt-kicked the fiction WIP and wrote 3 NEW CHAPTERS! Woot! I’ve scheduled the thriller writing into the work day, or it won’t get done, and by golly gee whillickers it’s gotta get done. I’ve an editor lined up to slash and burn and everything.

I’ve gotta send a shout out to RedRoom.com because they’ve hooked me up with both the Paw Nation folks AND Huffington Post to provide blogs/columns. It’s tremendous promo opportunity. On top of that, for the Paw Nation stuff they donated funds to the nonprofit of my choice so my writers organization also benefits. If y’all haven’t checked it out, go to RedRoom.com and join–it’s all about authors and writers (AND they’re in the process of putting together a program/help for indie authors, too).

I just started a two-week Fast Draft challenge: writing 20 pages or 5000 words a day for 14 days straight! It’s a technique taught (and used) by author Candace Havens. I’m using to draft a new sci-fi romance novel about the sea. I’m REALLY psyched about it!

Of course, I have to share credit where it’s due: my Slick Chicks crit group–Jen. Laura, and Sharla.
And the person who got me excited about writing fresh “stuff” and starting a new project: Margie Lawson.

Have to give Laura a shout out for her tenacity and whoop-whoop for getting an agent. I know her book will be on shelves in 2012. In her next life she’s going to be the world champion cheerleader.

Great concept! I’ll pimp a recent client I made a book trailer for. It’s my first YA read, and it’s setting is a Sci-Fi, Dystopian world. I found it quite enjoyable and you can view the trailer on You Tube. I think he still has the first 3 chapters available to read free if anyone is interested.
http://youtu.be/ILg-L4gE29U – the details are in the “show more” bar below the screen.
As for self-pimping. My genre is rather dark 😉 but I’ll say working on a dark urban fantasy novella with a *unique twist* in that the lead hero is a Chinese man. It’s a story of sorcery, hungry ghosts, a tad bit about revenge, but ultimately – this Solomon Kane style character, named Chiang – is a hunter of evil, and the rest I shall not say. 😉 I figured out the conclusion of his story just today! lol. It’s a prelude novel to a series of stand alone novels. Novella is called “I Chiang”.
