Doing the Melon “Bootie Shake” at More Cowbell!

Many of you know that I’ve become a somewhat avid gardener in the last few months, reaping the rewards of my father-in-law, the green-thumbed magician who gave me splendid soil. I still don’t know what he did to my dirt, but I sure do like it.

You discovered my love affair with my garden in Mad Love for My Zucchini and heard my impatient woes in Moping Over My Melon.

Now I’m doing the melon dance in full Sandra-Bullock-Butt-Waggling style (cross her dance in The Proposal with the tune of “Baby’s Got Back“):

I love my melons and I cannot lie.
Their beauty you can’t deny..

Woot-woot!

I’ll stop with the bad lyrics…suffice it to say there was bootie shaking all over my backyard yesterday. I was sooooo happy to finally see melon. (Below is Sandra’s official dance with Betty White, in case you haven’t seen it.)

But back to my melon….I HAVE EIGHT OF THEM!! I was so excited I had to take pictures (of the melon, not my bootie shake).

I did get some advice from an experienced gardener to elevate them while they grow so that bugs don’t eat my melon out from under me (from the soil side) – those are Baby Girl’s baby food jars glinting in the sun.

Can you see them there, hiding under my gorgeous, round, striped, glorious melons?

To all of you who told me to be patient, and encourage the bees – THANK YOU! I can’t wait to see these when they’re ripe.

We bought an ice-cream maker today with some gift cards so I’m going to find out whether or not I can use the melon in my ice-cream. Does anyone have a great melon recipe? Or maybe an ice-cream recipe for me to try? I’ve never used an ice-cream maker before so all tips are appreciated!

p.s. Did you all get to see Margie Lawson’s fantastic post at Writers In The Storm yesterday? There are tips from Margie, Francine Prose and Barbara Kingsolver, plus many more in the comments. Go take a peek!

See you Monday,
Jenny

Thanks, Miss Starla! Believe it or not, these are canteloupe – but I still don’t know if I can find an ice cream recipe for them. I guess there’s a reason why you always see “melon sorbet” and not melon ice cream. I think I do need to come have a talk with your garden…and your swimming pool. 🙂

  3. I’m with Laura! Give it up, Jenny. Sandra Bullock already has enough credits. And, she makes tons of money making an a** of herself on film. Not that your booty dance would, but…

I read Margie’s blog (try not to miss any of Margie’s posts). Huge fan of WITS and your posts, Jenny. Even when the topic doesn’t apply to me (no garden, no plans for a garden). I read the posts because your voice is so dang fun!

ACK! Getting website set up on WordPress (it’s been on my WL for 3 weeks running now), so I’ll be tuning into some of your on-line sage counsel. What’s the worst that can happen? It’s not gonna bite me, right? Right?

Laura, Margie tells me you’re relocating to Texas soon. Hope it’s in the DFW area. I live in Westlake and would love to meet you.

Thanks, Gloria! We love having you too…your comments are ALWAYS fun. On the WordPress front, everyone thinks it’s gonna bite them. Worst case scenario is that you won’t have all the widgets you want. (It sounds funny, doesn’t it? Being a poor widget-less child…)

Oh, I’m so glad you finally got melons. That sounds so wrong for some reason. And, yes, I did read the great post at Writers In The Storm. Love that Margie.

  5. Congrats on the growing melons! (Somehow that doesn’t sound right but you know what I mean) I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll get some, too.

  6. Those are huge! Do you know anything about fruit soup? I saw it at foodnetwork.com while looking for a recipe. 🙂

I don’t know anything about fruit soup, but if it involves canteloupe you can bet I’m going to be looking into it on the Food Network. Thanks, Marilag!!

  7. Hilarious video and yay on the melons! I get so excited when things grow in my garden. Right now, the poms and grapes are growing fat and lovely. I love to visit them every morning. 😀 I’ve got a few hot peppers too. My tomato seems to be going very sloooow. Hopefully, it’ll get with it soon.
